Does anyone in here have any experience with http://u-lite.org

I am thinking about taking some old crap systems and fixing them up and installing this on them to give to a mens shelter here in town and was wondering what you think of this.

Sounds like a great idea. Make sure they are made to be mostly noob-proof, as much as possible.

just figure it will be for internet, open office, and light application work.

Nothing to hard to figure out.

Seems like a nice lightweight desktop anyway (running it right now). If you've already got a current Ubuntu CD, you can just install that, then install the LXDE desktop with Synaptic (it's in the repositories) then remove Gnome.

What are the hardware specs you are running on?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jasonraymondson', 'W')hat are the hardware specs you are running on?

Newer than what you're talking about most likely, tho' certainly not the latest. Single core AMD 64 3.5 GHz with 2 Gigs memory (upgraded from 512 Megs), Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE on-board graphics. But from a quick look it appears that the minimum requirements for the minimalist Ubuntu aren't that much higher than for U-lite; I was just suggesting a possible alternative method of installing a system if you already had the Ubuntu disk available.

Both Gnome and KDE are pretty hoggish on resources, which is why these assorted 'lightweight' distros use minimalist desktops like LXDE, XFCE, Fluxbox, etc. It's been awhile since I upgraded, and I can run Gnome with no problem so that's what I generally use (used to run KDE but got tired of it), but I think there's an option to install at least one of the lightweight alternatives with the regular install CD. I don't remember for sure tho'...

Not done U-lite, but I revived old hardware using puppy and another version (damn small??). Worked pretty well. I've also used my usb mandriva system on some pretty old boxes with reasonable results.

That should be adequate to run regular Ubuntu then, at least the 512 Meg systems:

"Ubuntu should run reasonably well on a computer with the following minimum hardware specification. However, features such as visual effects may not run smoothly."

  • 700 MHz x86 processor
  • 384 MB of system memory (RAM)
  • 8 GB of disk space
  • Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution
  • Sound card
  • A network or Internet connection

"If you have an old or low-spec computer or want to get the most out of your hardware, using a lightweight desktop system such as Xubuntu is recommended, as it should make more efficient use of your system's resources. Of course, even if you have the newest equipment out, you could still use Xubuntu."

  • 800 MHz processor
  • 256 MB of system memory (RAM)
  • 6 GB of disk space
  • Graphics card capable of 800x600 resolution

The one thing I can be certain of, is that ubuntu (full flavor) requires 1gb or more ram. I have used it on a couple demo installs and yes, it will run on 512... but damn is it slow. That is why I am in the consideration process for U-Light.

Well yea, especially if you have all the 'eye candy' settings cranked up.

Anyway, I've got U-lite running in a virtual machine set to 512 Megs memory, on top of regular Ubuntu, right now. Posting this from it in fact. Seems quite usable with that amount of memory. Seems to me tho' that it's essentially just Ubuntu with the OpenOffice suite, games and all but a few of the most basic configuration utilities stripped out, some lightweight Gecko-based browser called Kazehakase instead of Firefox, and of course the LXDE desktop instead of Gnome. It does include AbiWord and Gnumeric Spreadsheet.

It has the Synaptic package manager and appears to have the Ubuntu 8.04 'Hardy Heron' repositories available in addition to one for U-lite.

Looks like the wireless-tools package is included, but I don't see any of the actual wireless kernel drivers, so you might need a wired connection for net access, not sure. The virtual machine I'm running bridges to my wireless connection as a virtual ethernet NIC.
