Web browser poll / anti-virus thread

Unread postby Sixstrings » Thu 30 Apr 2009, 23:53:58

This is a bit off-topic, but I'm always complaining / doomworrying so much on this forum that I thought I'd say something positive. I really LOVE Google Chrome. I've used it for a long time, but recently my 'puter was on the fritz (had some viruses) and Chrome stopped working and I had to go back to IE until I got everything wiped off and reinstalled.

Let me just say that having to use IE really reminded me what a vastly superior product Chrome is. It's all about SPEED. Chrome loads faster. Add to that, there is not one iota of junk on the browser -- nothin but your tabs. No Hotmail button, no Gmail button, no messenger buttons, no freakin buttons at all. I love it.

In IE tabbed browsing, you can's close a tab without clicking on it first. In Chrome the tab x's all show at once so you can quickly close out tabs. In IE, there's also a little lag when you click on a window tab -- small, but seems forever after you get used to Chrome's instant action.

So that's it for this post. Just wanted to say something that corporate America has done RIGHT. Bravo Google for this one. By the way, I use XP, so maybe I'm out of date on IE versions (I've used IE though on a friend's comp, and the vista setup is even slower yuck).

While I've got this thread going, does anyone have a recommendation for anti-virus? (free or free trial would be nice) I tried AVG, but I noticed it interferes with everything on the web -- I can't download crap. And there's no option to shut the darn thing off temporarily.

I'm on linux and chrome (last time I checked) wasn't available yet for linux. I'm quite happy with firefox but will try Chrome when it is available (And I figure out how to remove any tracking info the evil Google has embedded)

In order of most used first

Firefox -------------- http://www.firefox.com
Opera --------------- http://www.opera.com/
Safari---------------- http://www.apple.com/safari/
Internet Exploder
Iron ------------------ http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php
Camino ------------- http://caminobrowser.org/ MAC ONLY
Konqueror --------- http://www.konqueror.org/download/ LINUX ONLY
Amaya -------------- http://www.w3.org/Amaya/User/BinDist.html
Flock ---------------- http://flock.com/ WINDOWS ONLY

There are also several text readers that I use from time to time, but this is pretty rare, as most of the time I don't care about those crazy lazy blind people.

and yes, I use all of those browsers each week.

I do not and will never use google chrome, but I do use the security safe Iron.

Firefox only.

Chrome is a spyware. Plain and simple.

Safari on Mac.

Why all this fuss about computer viruses? We don't have 'em on Macs.

Tried Chrome. Didn't like it. Slow and buggy compared to Firefox.

And I can't live without the various Firefox add-ons. I'd have given up on being a news editor long ago without BBCodeXtra.

I don't use an anti-virus program. I've found that if you don't use Microsoft programs to surf the web or answer e-mail, and set Windows so you can see the full name of the files (including the extensions - .exe, .scr, etc.), you don't need anti-virus software. For me, it's more trouble than it's worth, since it tends to slow your computer down and cause conflicts with other software. You just have exercise a modicum of care.

If there were other people using the computer, it would be a different story, but I'm the only one on my computers.

I use Opera primarily for its superior zooming capabilities which really helps when viewing webpages on my 1080P monitor.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')e can now safely stop all the paranoia about Chrome. We can see the information that Google Chrome sends to Google using SpyStudio and we know that this depends on the options you choose. So Chrome is not spyware that sends everything you do to Google. I also believe it is important to understand what features the Incognito mode provides and not assume things about it.

I would rather not browse the web if a Google product - any google product - was all that was available.

Google is evil.

Exactly the same here, but I upgraded AVG a few months ago. The only virus we've had was on the business computer that I left turned on, because an employee downloaded some hacker crap on purpose. I found it and had it gone after a day or two of the computer being possessed... you know... turning on and off on it's own.

If you want antivirus use Linux. I am running Etch.

Opera seems slower than Epiphany on my computer, but I'm more used to running Opera. I remember the Bjork version fondly, and still have a copy burned onto a tiny business-card CD around here somewhere.

My wife runs Firefox because that's what her medical transcription job requires.

I still have yet to load Flash player onto my Etch box. If you load it, then it's no longer *stable.* It prevents me from seeing one or two web pages, but then, all other pages load so much faster and we watch movies on my wife's computer, anyway. So when you all load up youtube things I never watch them because it requires FleshPlayer, and I'm not going to get on my wife's computer just to watch some joke. If it's real news, it should be text, anyway.

When I turn off reporting in Chrome & do a WireShark capture I don't see any spyware communication.
