$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Jack', 'P')eak Oil Jane is simply another channel for information. Some people like to interact with humans, and some don't.
As for the picture, I see no reason not to use an engaging image. The smiling, optimistic image may offset some of the more dire images of members that seem to concern a few.
Let's concern ourselves with substantive issues instead of trivialities. I believe there are enough worthwhile matters to keep us engaged.

I was taking a break from digging a foxhole. Anyway, I find it interesting that you say its an engaging picture. What kinds of pictures would you find disengaging? If Jane were a 45 year old female with a facial disfigurement would it make a difference?
I probably would not have said anything but the picture loads with every page, so its unavoidable. I tend to think as a social phenomenon its interesting. For example, there are many bars of soap in the supermarket yet not one features a smiling woman fresh out of the shower. Are we heading there? Perhaps.
If you think about it, or watch TV or surf the internet, these stock-photo smiling people are
everywhere... A soap marketing campaign would make sense, she's naked, wet, and "clean". But its being used to push an artificial intelligence line-parsing program with the end of industrial civilization as the subject. Is that appropriate?
Sex and youth and beauty is being used today to sell everything from insurance to cars to phones to real estate. I can't tell whether its success is due to human nature or just laziness on the part of advertisers and designers. I mean, did a focus group of psychologists do a massive study to conclude that this one tact is mesmerizing beyond all else?
Maybe a message board about Peak Oil could better get out the word with a swimsuit issue. Put Jane's face at the top next to the logo. Who the heck are those guys in the tiny little pictures on the left column? I'd rather see a blonde, brunette, etc. Lets have some variety!
And please, no crooked teeth. I hate that.
