I like Peak Oil Jane! We just had the nicest chat:

JD: What's the solution to peak oil?
POJ: There may be more than one.

JD: Will oil definitely peak?
POJ: I can't say for sure right now.

JD: Will nuclear save us?
POJ: Good chance.

JD: Will humanity triumph over peak oil and rule the universe?
POJ: The oracle says: I think maybe yes.

JD: Should I worry about peak oil?
POJ: Do what feels right to you.

JD: Is the earth sacred.
POJ: The earth is a sphere.

Isn't she a sweety? I can see you doomers have been asleep at the switch here. What a waste, it would be so easy to do a doomer-bot.

Keyword: Nuclear
Response: Nuclear? Hah! You gotta be braindead to buy into nuclear

Keyword: Coal
Response: One word: EROEI. Look it up sometime dingus.

Keyword: Solution
Response: Yah right!

Peak oil Jane is a software robot (also known as a bot), a virtual personality, if you will. In some ways, she responds like a Magic 8 ball, but it is not random, rather it is based upon a default program of responses. She is in the learning mode and rather basic at the moment. We are training her to respond to questions on energy and peak oil.

Not really a great conversation partner:

M: What is peak oil?
J: The midpoint of global oil production.
M: No. That's inaccurate.
J: Are you serious? Thanks for explaining it.
M: So you're not interested in finding out what peak oil really is?
J: Interesting deduction. Sure, finding out what peak oil really is sounds like a good topic.
M: Peak oil is the point at which world oil production achieves its ever maximum rate.
J: When is Peak oil not the point at which world oil production achieves its ever maximum rate?
M: Never.
J: So you think it can never happen.
M: It must happen.
J: It depends on what the meaning of the word "it" is.
M: I give up.

And is not that the midpoint of production? From there it is in decline.

Yes, she has limited responses so far.

Q: When will peak oil be?
A: Maybe never.

Q: Is peak oil in 2005 or 2007?
A: Maybe. Ask Alison if it is.

Q: Who the hell is Alison?
A: she is a robot created by Kris Drent.

Q: Who the hell is Kris Drent?
A: he is the botmaster of the Alison chat robot.

Q: Peak oil is coming when?
A: I think peak oil is a lot of things.

... *sigh*

Peak Oil Jane has to go!

Unread postby BlisteredWhippet » Fri 11 Mar 2005, 16:05:58

Okay, I'm sick of seeing peak oil Jane staring out at me every time I visit the site. Anyone sufficiently brain damaged to want to converse with a computer on a message board filled with humans is either far more advanced than the rest of us or utterly hopeless. No offense Aaron, Jane, HAL, or whoever.

I'm just feeling a little shellshocked lately because attractive models from stock photography seem to be staring out at us from every conceivable advertisement today. Anyone know what I'm talking about? The smug/smiling/seductive look straight into the camera, wonderfully vacant and sterile, slapped on a product ad as if they figured out mathematically a decade ago that this formula was the absolute most effective way to get people to look at ads?

Jane looks like she was lifted directly out of an Abercrombie & Fitch or Calvin Klein ad. Take a closer look- the cosmetically enhanced teeth, bleached and perfectly aligned. The manicured eyebrows. Theres already at least several thousand dollars that have gone into making that face "pretty"- maybe even a nose job. Is she a "natural blonde"? I doubt it.

The only human feature that hasn't been altered is the epicanthal fold around her eyes.

"Peak oil Jane" could very well be under 18 years of age. Obvisously this reflects someone's idea of beauty, but to me its just tastelessness in concept and presentation, utterly conventional and blandly provacative. If anyone has spent more than 2 minutes "conversing" with Jane, tell us what drugs you were on and if there's a mental health professional I can help referring you to. If you actually masturbated while talking to Jane, please look for help under "Mental Health" in the Yellow Pages, or try calling one of those "women call free" 24hr chat lines.

Jane's picture is something I might expect Hitler to have enlarged, matted and framed in his office with a title describing her as the Aryan Beauty Ideal.

In the off chance I may have offended an administrator because Jane is his sister or something, please accept my apologies.

Did you and Jane have a fight? Remember, there are other computers you can talk to in order to get your jollies. In the words of a Ghettoian, "don't be hatin'."

Peak Oil Jane is simply another channel for information. Some people like to interact with humans, and some don't.

As for the picture, I see no reason not to use an engaging image. The smiling, optimistic image may offset some of the more dire images of members that seem to concern a few.

Let's concern ourselves with substantive issues instead of trivialities. I believe there are enough worthwhile matters to keep us engaged. 8)

I’m with Jack; you must remember that different people have different learning modes – besides, my granddaughter likes her.

According to poll results so far the percentage of visitors getting info from Jane seems low... I understand there are different learning modes. I for one can't think straight looking at a naked female smiling at me so its counterproductive.

I was taking a break from digging a foxhole. Anyway, I find it interesting that you say its an engaging picture. What kinds of pictures would you find disengaging? If Jane were a 45 year old female with a facial disfigurement would it make a difference?

I probably would not have said anything but the picture loads with every page, so its unavoidable. I tend to think as a social phenomenon its interesting. For example, there are many bars of soap in the supermarket yet not one features a smiling woman fresh out of the shower. Are we heading there? Perhaps.

If you think about it, or watch TV or surf the internet, these stock-photo smiling people are everywhere... A soap marketing campaign would make sense, she's naked, wet, and "clean". But its being used to push an artificial intelligence line-parsing program with the end of industrial civilization as the subject. Is that appropriate?

Sex and youth and beauty is being used today to sell everything from insurance to cars to phones to real estate. I can't tell whether its success is due to human nature or just laziness on the part of advertisers and designers. I mean, did a focus group of psychologists do a massive study to conclude that this one tact is mesmerizing beyond all else?

Maybe a message board about Peak Oil could better get out the word with a swimsuit issue. Put Jane's face at the top next to the logo. Who the heck are those guys in the tiny little pictures on the left column? I'd rather see a blonde, brunette, etc. Lets have some variety!

And please, no crooked teeth. I hate that.

BW, you are in a very bad mood!

I know how you feel; my ground is so darn rocky I have a hard time getting down 2 feet! Hard to get good cover.
