Flash mob - Peak oil awareness

Unread postby MisterB » Fri 13 Feb 2009, 20:59:17

One way to increase awareness of peak oil issues would be via a flash mob.

The way I see it would be that a group of people arrange to turn up at a supermarket at a set time/date.

They all rush to the bottled water/canned foods and dry goods section of the supermarket and fill their trolleys as quick as possible ( a few fake arguments thrown in for good measure) Would be interesting too see public reactions.

I am not asking anyone to do this, mainly because I could not organise on that scale myself. I just find it an interesting idea so thought I would share.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('MisterB', 'I') could not organise on that scale myself.

That's the beauty of flash mobs - once the idea takes hold, they are self-organizing.

I believe most municipal codes usually have something about 'inciting to riot'...

Good. Make sure you don't.

wiki page: Larry Niven's "Flash Crowd"

Excellent science fiction story on this very topic. In the future teleportation becomes commonplace where the world becomes fully networked with transport booths wehre you can "flick" instantly to any place on the planet.

A new cultural phenomena grows from that; the "Flash Crowd". CNN brings the hot story, and people from all over the planet start flicking into the scene.

Larry plays with the teleportation theme throughout many of his books, and does so with great insight.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

What exactly would such a group be protesting?

Aside from basic Peak Oil awareness (as if such a group could explain Peak Oil) what would be the aim?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 't')hat's a pretty nice tee. Can we buy it here?

Sure, assuming they're still in stock anyway. Check the 'PeakGear' link in the main menu...
