What about families who live far away from each other?

I have this problem, I know this girl who lives in the Philippines for 2 years now and when i was graduated I went to see her there. I'm planning to go back to see her next month and we want to think about our future.

And I'm hoping that we can live in the same country soon. But i'm always thinking that if she wants to come to Belgium there is a real change that she can't go back to her homecountry and see her parents and sisters and brother.

And to be honest I doubt that Belgium or Europe is a good place to live in the long term.

So I have this idea that maybe I should Invest my money in the philippines buy a house with a big lot there and all other things you need to live "independant" from the system as much as possible.

Philippines isn't exactly what you can call the best country to live in but at least she is close to her family and friends. I can't let her come to Belgium can I? because I really think that she will be stuck here forever and can't go to her home country because flying will be so expensive that you have to save years for it before you can finally buy a ticket, assuming you still have work by then.

It's pretty hard to think of an altervative to what we have now. Most of the time I'm thinking well she should come here to Belgium we have retirement, when you lose your job you get support from the goverment, when you have kids you get money to support them. we will earn a lot of money here. But then i'm thinking hmm this could all go away soon and the only thing this country has to offer is debt that we never can pay back.

so what do you think is best in my situation should I leave europe and emigrate to the philippines and try to start a business of my own? or that she should go to Belgium because things won't be that bad here.
I got some money that my Grandmother gave me when she passed away in 2008. 70 000 euro I think that's a good start for a business there. just don't know what yet.

I know Russia has probably peaked for a second time now. this is really something that scares the hell out of me. And if that is true there is not much hope. except for maybe some miracle breaktrough in algae oil or nuclear fusion but that is very unlikely.

Sorry for the spelling mistakes and thanks for reading I really apreciate it.

It all depends on your expectations for the future. People used to go to the Phillipines using sailing boats. So even if things get pretty bad, you can still go there. Don't throw away your future for what *might* happen.

Compare your job prospects in Belgium versus the Philippines.

Then compare the cost of living.

Do you have a set of skills that makes you valuable in one country but not the other?

If she's separated from her family, it's unfortunate. If you cannot survive in the Philippines, it's worse than unfortunate, it's a disaster.

I can easily imagine a scenario in which Belgium emerges from a Post Peak World as a fine place to live with a stable government and a functioning economy...with the Philippines a flaming wreck.

I can't imagine Belgium becoming a disaster zone with a thriving Philippines.

The Philippines is a very crowded archipelago without enough domestic food production to feed itself. Foreign remittance is more important than foreign direct investment for its economy. The population is growing rapidly (more than 1/3 of the population is below 14 years old!) and any problems it has now will increase in the future.

I just don't think a poor, crowded island chain is a better place to live in a post peak world than a rich, crowded country. Moreover, being an EU citizen, you can travel around Europe looking for work.

You can't do that in the Philippines. If your business fails, you're out of luck.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')ut i'm always thinking that if she wants to come to Belgium there is a real change that she can't go back to her homecountry and see her parents and sisters and brother.

I think this is pre-mature worrying. In very hard times, like the past World Wars, extended families have unfortunately been separated permanently. There's nothing you can really do about that, except to keep your immediate, local family safe -- that is your primary responsibility.

Maybe I missed something, I don't think you mentioned marriage. But if you were to marry this girl and live in Belgium, you would have in effect two home bases if TSHTF. So when trouble comes knocking, you may be able to get some of her family to Belgium, or go to the Phillipines (whichever is safer.. my bet would be on Belgium).

Just ask yourself two questions.

Are currently more Filipinos wanting to emigrate to Belgium (or surrounding countries), or are there more central Europeans wanting to migrate to the Philippines?

The answer is generally a good indication where life is easier and more enjoyable.

Second question: If TSHTF would you expect more Filipinos wanting to emigrate to Belgium or again vice versa?

Whichever way you choose, one of you has to cut ties with his past. Even now when airfares are getting cheaper all the time you would not travel to the other country regularily.

Basing decisions on today's societies and economies is not much help if the future is likely to be very different.

In the future, any society that emerges will have to live sustainably or suffer rises and collapses continuously. What the path to a sustainable future will be, no-one knows. What the path to a continuous, decreasing, cycle of boom and bust will be we're starting to get an inkling of, but no-one knows.

Figure out what sort of future life you want to build for yourself and set about it. It might not be in either Belgium or Philippines.

My neighbour was married to a Filipino girl and had a nice place there. It was buried by Mt. Pinatubo. When he went back he could not find where it was and the whole area was taken over by squatters.

He broke up with his wife and moved here, so I have to listen to him complaining about his misfortunes.

Consider Saskatchewan.
