Cheese and sausage

Looks like Hickory Farms had a bad Christmas. Might BK soon. But the good news is everything is 75% off. Use this code for another 15% off that. 849358

I don't work or invest with Hickory Farms. Just thought it was a good deal I'd let you all know about.

I can't stand Hickory farms stuff - WAY TOO MUCH SALT/NITRATES/FAT/ETC.. Makes me gag. Not trying to badmouth your link here, just the dubious quality of their "food".

If you have cash, there will be lots of buying opportunities like this during 2009-2010. Keep your powder dry so you can pounce. I'm actually going to buy some of those in case shipping isn't too terribly expensive and store them in my doom section of the fridge. That is salted/cured dairy and meat and will last a long time.

When I was a kid, my grandparents in Wisconsin would send a few logs of summer sausage for Christmas. Always loved the stuff. Have no idea what brand they were, if any -- don't recall ever seeing a brand on them.

Agree that Hickory Farms products, particularly summer sausage, were very disappointing when I tried them as an adult. Their summer sausage was too greasy and limp. More like stiff baloney. The stuff I recall liking so much as a kid was very firm & dry-textured.

Short of making my own, any idea who makes decent summer sausage these days, if anyone?

I'm not a fan of those beef logs, but they do have some sales on sweet treats too. (reduced sugar vanilla torte for $2.00, reduced sugar petit fours for $2.85) Also 24 (full sugar~LOL) iced petit fours for $4.75

There is also a section for military gifts and it says they have FREE shipping to APO/ FPO military addresses, which I think is a great idea.

I was going to order some stuff, but shipping is $9.99.

Thanks! I bought the Summer Sausage and Cheese box. I could even use a coupon code for another 15% off.

I even sent myself a nice little note.

Quick review:
This is excellent doomer storage food for thr most part suitable for long term storage.

The crackers are not sealed and should be eaten in due time. The crackers taste like stale un-leavened bread but serve their purpose.

The summer sausage is a meat product which is marginally edible and should be eaten as a last resort. My dog ate a bite, although I read other online reviewers who stated their dogs would not touch the stuff.

The cheese is highly processed but fairly edible.

As far as doomer food goes, it's not so bad. It is also useful for backpacking trips. Make sure that you cut it with other foods like grains and vegetables as this is highly processed protein food.

One thing I did notice is that the summer sausage tastes absolutely disgusting if you are accustomed to well made meat, as we are here in Texas. It is incredibly salted with god knows what. I would recommend cutting the summer sausage with 75% matrix of other food. One small summer sausage contained 1040 calories and 200% of a day's saturated fat and 100% of a day's sodium.

As far as doomer food goes for the back of the closet, this is excellent stuff. I packed everything into the back of my closet and expect that it will last for years.

I think I'm starting to understand why they're going out of business :)
