Why do we so often to lose something b4 we appreciate it?

Something that happened earlier today triggered an idea for this thread.

Just wondering what it is about humans that this is so often true.

Feel free to hit at it from a evolutionary, psychological, philosophical and/or spiritual angle.

Obviously it is possible to truly, deeply appreciate something wonderful while it is right in front of you (and I've gotten better at it in my old age :-D) but, still, for many (& for myself in many situations) it still takes a loss to make you step back & really consider what you had.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Narz

P.S. : Was going to put this in "psychology" but it's not really "peak oil" related so I thought here would be a better choice. Mods can move it if they see fit.

hi Narz, I think that often people idolize what they lost, making lost things into more than they actually were. Actually maybe that should be the question; why do we idolize what we have lost or do not have?

People get desensitized to their environment and their daily routine as it becomes more repetitious.

Habituation

Sudden changes in experience, positive and negative (i.e. NOVELTY) will register more than constant repetition.
