History Channel's The Universe

Unread postby angrybill » Mon 15 Dec 2008, 19:04:19

"The Universe as we know it is condemned to death. Space, matter and even time will one day cease to exist and there's nothing we can do about it. Harsh realities are revealed about the future of our Universe; it may collapse and burn or it might be gripped by a galactic ice age. Either of these scenarios might be a long way off. However, our Universe could suddenly be destroyed by a "random quantum fluctuation", a bubble of destruction that can obliterate the entire cosmos in the blink of an eye. No matter how it ends, life in our Universe is doomed. "

A thought provoking show I've have the pleasure of watching just two episodes thus far on a recent trip. Nice show.

Our universe will die, because of stellar drift. It is expanding and so everything is getting farther and farther apart. Eventually, in something like 1X10^27 years or so it will just die.

does this happen just one time? Or when all is said and done, do we just restart the movie? Or is there an infinite number of ways the movie could be played out? Or there is no answer to that?

do "random quantum fluctuations" happen all at once everywhere? or restricted by speed of light?

I agree. It's some of the better television out there. I've watched all the episodes today.

Sometimes their examples are so over-simplifed as to be somewhat silly, but the shows have generally been good.

It got me interested in the ultimate fate of the universe. I found some good reading on that here. http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/end.html

< spoiler alert >

Proton decay. Eventually everything just dissolves away to absolutely nothing. Literally Nothing.

I read the article and if you look at the first link within is an interesting picture. http://www.scotese.com/future2.htm
The first thing that came to my mind was self-preservation, the Earth and life as a whole. Catastrophic events could eventually bring center mass together again. Try Looking at that picture and what does your natural mind tell you. With you could all do without having read my comments first but try to keep yours independent so we don't have bias’s answers. Cool!
