Why don't they just ask every single person to send in $2333.00 now. This way it won't get passed on to the children and it won't incur interest.

Maybe they should just say, "whoops, folks, send us back those economic stimulus checks." I've read on several economics blogs that the real reason for the bailout is that the Fed is about to freeze up too. Capital running out with all these rescue schemes.

I had the same idea myself...

Problem is not everyone actually pays taxes. People on certain types of government assistance don't pay taxes... Those unemployment lines are growing around here daily. I moved to Michigan from Toledo, OH where the unemployment rate is almost 10 percent... About double the national average.

I don't see an easy solution around the corner.

It is my understanding that we are not yet in a recession too. :shock:

Yep, no recession here. Everything is just fine. Banks crashing, high unemployment, the treasury needs money, ... yep the fundamentals are just amazing.

I know what you mean and you're probably right... They'll come begging for more later. I would honest to goodness rather pay for it now, than have my kids turn into tax paying slaves in the future. What is their world going to be like? I don't mind living a simpler life, but I worry that it may be more than 'simple' for them, hardship comes to mind. It isn't even their fault...

We do live within our means, and I think I've taught them well about budgeting money. I sat right down with them and made a list of our bills... (Though, I only showed them one of my husbands pay checks... They don't need to know everything...) Anyway, they do have a firm grasp of home economics, and have stopped begging me for everything they 'want'.

You could do like Truman and Eisenhower did with WWII debts. They had this strange little word for it. What was that? Oh, yeah, "sacrifice". What was that all about, anyway?

Note that the top marginal tax rate through those years was 91%. Eyes opened yet?

It's not that many people paid near 91%. Rather, it meant that the corporate executive types were strongly encouraged toward sane salaries and reinvesting in their businesses, rather than padding their already insane bank accounts. That's the story of what happened between Gilded Age I and Gilded Age II.

When we went to Iraq, where was the slightest, tiniest, request for sacrifice? Where?

Oh man. That nailed it. This 700b won't put more than a dent in this problem. Shortly, 'they' will come asking for more. And 'they'll' get it too! We needn't lose sleep over this 700b.

It's what 'they' ask for next that will cause people to lose sleep. 8O

That's a very good question. I saw the exact opposite happen... Interest rates dropped to historic lows, to encourage people to buy homes that they really couldn't afford. Regulations were dropped so many companies could do as they pleased without the worries of oversight and recourse. Tax rates were cut for many people, instead of increased as they were during wars before. And I could go on and on. I'm also pretty sure that most of the members of this site have been aware of those things, and more for a long time.

Let me tell you another thing... I hate taxes! I really, Really, REALLY hate taxes! Something should have been done long before they could announce that we are in a "financial crisis."

I really feel that the people that caused this "crisis" should be paying back those huge bonuses, or face jail time. But you know that aint gonna happen.

It's comforting to know the politicians had our backs covered and our best interests in mind.
