$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Carlhole', ' ')You know, science and reason became the dominant tools for seeking truth after the centuries of religious atrocities in Europe during the Middle Ages - the Inquisitions, The Crusades, burnings and tortures for blaspheming, etc. -- for hundreds of years.
After the plague wiped out a third of the population (regardless of anyone's position, morality, or importance) everyone could plainly see that the church had no real power. It was all a plain sham. And since the much-feared heavy yoke of the clergy had fallen away, new growth and new intellectual vigor soon replaced it in the form of The Enlightenment in which men of reason cast off their silly beliefs and rigorously sought the truth.
It wasn't too terribly long before the same people of Europe used their new science to figure out what the plague actually had been. They then invented ways to prevent it. They didn't accomplish this feat by praying or dealing Tarot cards or studying numerology.
It's all very funny to me that you treat golem's nonsense as some kind of ideal (as you tap away on your computer keyboard connected to the world wide web) while you treat science and reason as some vaguely contemptible subject that you can disparage as somehow less wholesome.
Well, you're a silly girl who can't think straight. And you must have never read any history.
Carl, one of the lists that I own deals EXACTLY with the subject matter you've just touched on. My own ancestors (Papa's side) come from that particular region of Germany (the Kraichgau/Elsentz)and Switzerland and were Anabaptists (Mennonites). They came to Pennsylvania and my family has been here since 1670. I know quite a bit about the Black death, and Baurenkreig (Peasant's war) and how it affected my own Ancestor's world view.
My Ancestors helped found Maxatawny township near Kutztown, and one of my ancestors was Colonel John Siegfried of the American Revolution. George Washington's Relatives married into our family. I am DAR. Of course, I know history.
One of the things we study on my list is the scientific and spiritual explanations of Braucher, or Hexerei, which is known as "Pow wow", a folk healing modality still practised in Pennsylvania and what we consider "Deitscherei"..the areas our folk migrated to, whether it be Canada or where many of the Mennonite still live. Also inclusive of this is the areas in Kansas,up to the Dakota's, into Wyoming and Montana where the Volga (Russian) Germans settled, they practise this healing format as well.
We have published authors on my list, PhD's and even, now, an M.D.! This subject matter has caused similar studies in Applachian Granny folk-healers, southern "root doctors", and people that work the Hoo-doo. (These, of course, are germaine to their own sub-cultures).
So, when you had accused me of not knowing or (possibly having studied) EXACTLY the thing you have accused me of, using the SAME region of Europe that I am descended from, it gave me a chuckle, Carl. Of course I have studied history, especially on arcane subjects like this, because I have a reason.
It is to PRESERVE this education and Healing folk modalities(herblore is a part of it.) for USE for people like you, (who may not believe it it) because it has worked over many centuries, and continues to work. It will be a very good tool when TSHTF and we have to go "low tech".
I may not advertise this here, but there are many of us that are quietly working in tandem to preserve "old-timey" knowledge and bring it up to the forefront to save (even) you, Carl.
..and yes, it *has* been studied scientifically. Same with Traditional Chinese Meds and other folk healing systems. Why does it work? How does it work? What are the paradigms and quantifiers? It just does, in many regards.
If you are interested, Carl, (or anyone else) PM me and I will give you the link to the group. I can also give a list of books for those interested. I would start by reading some of the works of Carlo Ginsburg. Yes, I *am* a "silly girl" who knows quite a bit of history Carl. For me, it's about family and heritage.
Blu
PS Hey, did ya catch that Hex sign I use as my avatar Carl? Gee, what d'ya think that means? Passive Magical use, maybe....???
