$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gonfishn', 'W')hy would we want that? Can you imagine the panic if the other 99.99 percent of the population actually figured out how screwed they are? Prep in peace and hope for the best I guess.
Perfect example of why we are in the deep end of the cess pool now, and why it will not change.
I think the question is really more about: whether one should be taking advantage of your knowledge to try to feather your own nest while you can, or whether we should utilize collective effort to try to remedy our common life threatening problems? This website is also a great example of just that dichotomy. (FYI - I've been personally trying to do both).
Self interest - survival - always comes first, always will. However, with overshoot, resource depletion and diminished carrying capacity, those same self interests collide directly with perpetuation of the species - our
genetic need to survive. The really sick part of all this is that there is no right answer - either way, "we" are screwed.
To answer the question, allenwrench, I think under the U.S. form of government, there is an
obligation to tell the truth to the citizens and let them decide the best course of action after receiving full information. Of course, the real corrupted world doesn't work that way, and each power interest will take advantage of our system to the fullest extent in order to maximize the benefits to themselves. The result being a dreadfully uninformed electorate that is destined to destroy itself.
Personally, if I did not have children, I could see tending to favor the "me, me, me" approach. On the other hand, since I have children that I love more than my own life, and a strong desire to give them the best future possible, I favor complete disclosure and dealing with the real issues, despite the pain and near-term sacrifice to our "standard of living".
The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that full disclosure is the only way to protect a Constitutional form of government, and save something, some possibilities, for future generations. The alternative appears to me as an increasingly rapid devolution to fascism/neo-feudalism, complete environmental degradation and resulting loss of carrying capacity, and the potential (likely) extinction of our species. So...from that perspective, can there be any other rational choice for our government to make?
