What have you been reading lately?

Unread postby ClassicSpiderman » Tue 29 Jul 2008, 07:07:18

As for me, besides from comic books, I've been reading "Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe". What a master of the English language! He only had one year of university education, though he was forced to drop out for lack of finances. That is evident that good writers are born, not made.

I understand and appreciate Poe, one should have a very high level of reading comprehension. I must admit that I've had to re-read many of the short stories multiple times to fully understand them at first.

My favorite Poe stories so far:

-The Adventure of one Hans Pfaal
-Hop Frog
-Fall of the House of Usher
-William Wilson

...but they're all good, really.

I'm rereading all of Orwell's major works (which I originally read as a teenager).

Started with "Burmese Days," proceeded to "The Road to Wigan Pier" and am now on "1984," his mind-blowing opus. Coming soon: "Down and Out in Paris in London," "Coming Up for Air," "Keep the Aspidistra Flying," and "The Clergyman's Daughter." And of course, "Animal Farm." I also have two biographies of the genius I plan to reread.

I encourage people to explore Orwell beyond the books usually read ("Animal Farm" and "1984").

What a shame he died in 1950, aged only 47. The good die young.

Just finished Robert Silverberg's "Majipoor Chronicles".

Nice blend of Sci-Fi and fantasy. Something to keep reality at bay for a brief time.

I'm an avid reader (no TV for me for the last 3 years or so), and besides the girlfriend went on holidays a couple of weeks ago, so I am catching up.

The last 2 months it's been Jarod Diamond's "Collapse", Terry Pratchett's "Soul Music" and "Limits to Growth, 30 years update".

Right now, I have an "Introduction to Economics" in the backpack. Gotta read it, I need it for my future classes!

If you like Silverberg you would probably love his "Hawksbill Station." It's about a prison camp in the Precambrian Era (i.e., prisoners are sent into the remote past to get rid of them). One of my favorite books.

Thanks! Will have a look for it at the library, next time I am there.

Wow, Schneider. Have you read much of it then? I tried to read it 20 years ago and couldn't get it, always wonder what I missed. Are you reading English or French?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mercurygirl', 'W')ow, Schneider. Have you read much of it then? I tried to read it 20 years ago and couldn't get it, always wonder what I missed. Are you reading English or French?

Hi mercurygirl,

I'm reading the english version since it is mostly the only one available (and i've hear the french version was shitty at best). Yes, i've read a good deal of the book ! So far I'm around the 2/3 of the book (chapter "anti-life").

I was always wondering why libertarians liked the book so much, now i know ! Be warned, in the characters there is no "gray" shade..just back or white..good or bad, but not much in between. It show the destruction/collapse of the world because of the inevitable side effects of full blow statism (under a mix of socialism and facism) .

I'm ready to say it have already changed sone of my outlooks on life quite a bit. Things i always somewhat knew, but never understood clearly enough.

I did wondered why peoples around me listened the standards of thoses in power and tried to do the same for a good share of my life!

But as time passed, i was fighting the conflict between listening the "social democracy mantra" pushed here in Quebec province from cradle to grave again my own standards/believes. Yeah, i look a bit naive said like that, but what can i say? It was the case.

That being said, i am not a egoist bastard, peoples have to stick toguether..but not at the expence of some kind of human sacrifices.

One thing for sure: Like it or not, it's worth taking the time of reading it. My guess is that the Founding Fathers of the United States would have like this kind of book :)..

"The Challenge Of Man's Future" by Harrison Brown

Written in 1953. It contains the the whole peak oil thing including a picture of a bell curve. It pretty much contains all the same concerns about resources and population as works that came out in the early 70's .

How come M. King Hubbert gets all the credit? I mean, the Brown guy was years ahead of him.

I had seen an article on Energy Bulletin by Kurt Cobb about this book. He had quoted paragraphs from it. So I looked on eBay and found a paperback copy for a couple of bucks.

1953!!! It's incredible how long all this stuff has been around mostly unaltered up to the present. The things that he is saying would fit right in seamlessly with the content that we here on PO.com pore over every day. Amazing.
