Would you know it was your birthday...If no one could agree on what day it was.
When was the last time you charted your birthday soley by reading the planets and stars?
When the lights go out...and they will...you very likely will never know what day is your birthday....or your son's...or mom's...
Now that is depressing.

I have thought about this a little and decided that whatever the future holds I will make a note of each passing day into the future. Since I cannot read the stars I will just have to be stubborn and remember to do it each day and to follow the "rules" as to length of months. There will be a calender as long as I am sane... hopefully one of the kids or grandkids will take it after that.

If I cann't power my Mac to know the year (using the Buddhist Epoch we're at 2551 BE) or if my 10-year battery clock (thinking of changing it to a solar model with thermometer and compass) stops working and no one can sell a replacements... well, I don't know how much of a collapse will be needed to make that happen... so the LAST thing I will like to know is in wtf year and month I'm; I will be too busy just surviving.

One of my preps that I have stored up is several boxes of pencils and a couple stacks of notepads. I plan on dedicating one of these notepads to keeping a daily log/calendar.

I can read the stars enough that I could tell the solstice and equinox on the day happened without too much trouble. After the lights are out permanently on civilization all we will have is the twinkling of the stars for entertainment. The knowledge will of this will not be lost. In fact I intend to become better at when there are less distractions like the Internet.

If we're too stupid to be able to figure out a way of keeping up with the date, then we deserve to be dead too. Not everybody is the kid at the McDonalds drive thru that can't figure out your change without a calculator.

If you don't know what day it is, It doesn't really matter.

Every day is your birthday. Go celebrate. :)

Incorrect. SPG is right. What's more, ancient peoples had extremely advanced calendrical records and rituals that were based on nature, but became religions. You, along with others, know this already.
The people aren't dead and their ways are not dead. Take hope, enjoy the sunset.

I cant wait for that day myself.

I HATE time in any tracked form. I dont even wear a wristwatch. If it werent for my fucking job I honestly probably wouldnt own a clock.

When I'm hungry I eat. When I'm tired I sleep. I dont eat at 8, 12 and 6. I dont sleep when its dark or get up when its light.

I go by what my body tells me. Unfortunately such a system isnt very conducive to getting along in todays civilization.

If I never knew what day it was again for the rest of my life I'd be a happier man for it.

Not sure I'd say I hate time, but I'm kind of the same and haven't worn a watch or any device for timekeeping in 15 years. But, as a result my internal clock is pretty accurate. I tend to know the time within 30 minutes.

And, I kind of like the idea of not knowing your birthday or how old you are. But, anyway there are plenty of people who can tell from the stars what day it is. The science is not at all lost to history.

It's funny. When you're younger, you're age is really important. What grade are you in? Are you old enough to drive? To buy cigarettes? To buy beer? To rent a car?

Since I hit 30, I tend not to remember how old I am anymore. Now if someone asks how old I am, I have to start doing math. "Let's see. It's June of 2008. I was born in...."

yesterday a friend asked me how old my sister was, I had no idea, like SPG i had to work out how old I was then subtract the age difference between us. I still got it wrong.

Hmmm... Can we use this "logic" elsewhere? Sure we can. For example:
If we are too stupid to be able to figure out a way of keeping the human population from exceeding its carrying capacity, then we deserve to be dead too. Ok - so what SPG?

My point still stands...you will not know when your birthday is when the grid collapses. Period. Your fantasies about reading the stars AND THEN convincing others your are right...are just that...fantasies.

Here ya go, Rocc. Just print one out (or 3 dozen). Laminate them. Pass them down like treasured heirlooms. Now you won't have to worry for at least 10,000 years. After that I can't help ya much.

You don't have to be able to read the stars. You just have to be able to cross off one day at a time on a calendar (and possibly remember how many days are in each month so you can make the next calendar. Actually people will cling to such activities as a way of maintaining their sanity and sense of normalcy.

Celestial observation for date calibration is possible and requires no high technology. Good lord. Sure, there are some that won't 'believe' it. There are people that don't believe the earth is not flat and that humans landed on the moon etc. So what? I don't believe the clock on my microwave.
