The Feed Store Blues

Unread postby UncoveringTruths » Wed 11 Jun 2008, 12:19:51

Went by the feed store yesterday and while I was there I observed an uncomfortable moment between a customer and the owner.

Lady customer in front of me comes up to the counter and inquires about the price of a 50# bag of corn.

The cute lady behind the counter quotes her a price.

Customer bemoans “that’s not the price you quoted me over the phone this morning”.

Owner steps in and says “we just received a price increase around noon and adds that the price went up $1 per 100#'s”.

Customer grumbles something and seems pissed as she purchases 50 bags and proceeds out the door to the loading dock obviously upset.

When I get to the counter the owner says "I wonder if gas station attendants are getting the same treatment?" with a concerned look on his face. He then proceeds to exclaim "I am the cheapest in town" and proceeds by naming his competitors prices.

I respond “it’s only going to get worse” and I suggested he hedge as much as he can by buying larger shipments.

Another patron chimes in” have you seen the price of steel its double what it was last year”.

Pick up my chicken scratch and shake my head as I head out the door.

Yep,
Go to any online forum regarding the care of farm animals and you'll find at least one thread about feed prices. We have chickens (laying hens), rabbits and dairy goats. I buy a lot of feed. The cost of feeding my animals has certainly increased, and I've had to pass the increase along to my customers. Like most other places, I keep the cost down as low as I can, but eventually my prices will go even higher.

Everytime I make a trip to the feed store, I just hold my breath and see what the price has gone up to. I don't complain at the store, though - I know our local feed store owner is doing the best he can. He's paying extra too.

Well -

a 50# bag of cracked corn at the feed store is still 2/3rds cheaper than a 50# bucket of corn from survivalacres.

Yep - you got that right.

If its good enough for the chicken...its good enough for me.

Actually it won't be me eating it ...rather the family and "friends" that have not prepared...

I will be eating the slaughter lamb...side of yams...and amaranth salad with some fresh peppers, tomatoes, and carrots from the garden.

My hens will eat anything I put in front of them. 2 of my neighbors toss things over the fence-melon rinds, stale bread, potato peels. When I'm out of town, they get grain, my neighbor feeds them. When I mow the lawn, they get a bag of clippings, get right to work on it. I pull weeds, they get he weeds. I get a plant with bugs, up it goes, in with the birds with it. I work at a restaurant now and then for something to do, save all the table scraps and waste the place generates that day. It's an all you can eat buffet.

I have, for now, 1/4 acre in town. This year one of my garden objectives is to grow enough corn to feed the birds for a year. It is a challenge.
