Populism makes its hearty return, and it's wearing the face of the quintessential rugged American, Chuck Norris.

Note the presence of popular myths and half-truths proffered as "evidence" that the volatile equilibrium of oil supply and demand is being distorted by one evil cadre (OPEC), or another (Congress). To the extent that the article seems amiss of logic and rational thought, it does serve as a call to NASCAR nation to circle the wagons and make the step, as another poster mentioned, from 1. Denial to 2. Anger.

Now, this is what you call a useful idiot.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mos6507', 'I') have lost what little respect I ever had for Chuck Norris.

I had just the opposite reaction---Chuck Norris has enough brains not to fall for the "gas prices have nothing to do with supply and demand----evil speculators cause high gas prices" line that Congress is pushing.

Now that Chuck Norris has spoken, I consider the matter closed.

Please do not disrespect Chuck Norris's omniscience by discussing the matter any further.

Just sit back and watch the price of oil fall as we drill, drill, drill!

Norris also disputes evolution and has fought hard to get creationism taught in public schools. I wonder what he would say if you asked him where oil comes from ?

In your dreams.

Back in the real world we are locked into watching the price of oil rise as Congressional dimwits claim supply and demand has nothing to do with the price of gasoline.

Are you saying that Chuck Norris is or is not omniscient?

Do you agree with his analysis that a lack of drilling is the problem?

What about the lacking of drilling equipment? Isn't that a problem too?

If the world is going to transition to other energy sources won't we need as much oil as possible to help or even make it possible ?
Ofcourse improved efficiency and conserving will be needed aswell.

Chuck Norris doesn’t read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he needs.

Penises and drilling have nothing in common except for "tip drilling" as famously described in the song by Rap Artist "Nelly' entitled "tip drill."

-------------

Most interpret the phrase "tip drill" to mean "a person with a 'nice' body but an 'ugly' face" or "a man with an 'ugly' face who has a lot of money," due to the lyrics "it must be yo ass 'cause it ain't yo face" and "it must be yo money 'cause it ain't yo face." This however, is not what the term is meant to mean in the song, Nelly is simply implying that he is attracted to said girl due solely to her buttocks, it is not saying that the girl must be ugly. The reason these girls are referred to as “tip drill’s” is because they have large buttocks, which is ideal for a sexual activity known as “tip drilling” which involves placing the penis between the buttocks without penetration.

I'm seeing these points on the auto and motorcycle sites. I wish I could find a succinct line-by-line refutation of the ones that are misleading.

They are really becoming popular.

  • Though we have more oil in the shale of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming than combined in the Middle East (800 billion barrels), liberals and environmentalists have made it illegal to touch it.
  • It's illegal to drill in northern Alaska (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge), or off the coasts of Florida or California.
  • Oil fields in Colorado are being shut down.
  • We won't develop shale oil fields in the Western states
  • It's illegal to explore in the Atlantic., Pacific, and Eastern Gulf of Mexico
  • We're not receiving any more leases to drill in the Gulf of Mexico, while China, Venezuela and Cuba are.
  • We haven't built an oil refinery in 25 years and reduced in half those we have
  • There's enough natural gas beneath America (406 trillion cube feet) to heat every home in America for the next 150 years, but we can't tap it all.
  • We have the largest supply of coal in the world, but it's Germany who is planning to build 27 coal-fired electrical plants by 2020.

Why refute things that are true?

Congress has indeed outlawed oil exploration in ANWR and the entire Atlantic, virtually all of the Pacific except the Santa Barbara basin, and most of the Gulf of Mexico.

And Germany is indeed planning to build coal-fired power plants--they have to build new power plants to replace the nukes they are shutting down because of environmentalist demands. Simultaneously, in the US, the Sierra Club Legal Defense fund has vowed to sue and tie construction up for decades to stop any future coal-fired power plants because of CO2 pollution and the greenhouse effect.

Chuck Norris is da man! If he says "drill drill drill!" I'm all for it. Maybe he could make a new movie called Spudding In. Make it about a drilling superintendent (Chuck) who does battle with the Mob that's getting all the roughnecks hooked on Meth.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')huck Norris's fight career lasted from 1964-1974. Norris started off by losing his first three tournaments but, by 1966, he was almost unbeatable. Among the numerous titles he won were The National Karate Championships (1966), All-Star Championships (1966), World Middleweight Karate Championship (1967), All-American Karate Championship (1967), Internationals (1968), World Professional Middleweight Karate Championship (defeating Louis Delgado on 24 November 1968), All-American Championship (1968), National Tournament of Champions (1968), American Tang Soo Championship, and the North American Karate Championship. Norris compiled a fight record of 65-5 with wins over champions Joe Lewis, Skipper Mullins, Arnold Urquidez, Ronald L. Marchini, Victor Moore, Louis Delgado, and Steve Sanders. Of the five men to beat Norris, three were Allen Steen, Joe Lewis, and Norris's last career defeat to Louis Delgado in 1968. Norris retired as undefeated Professional Full-Contact Middleweight Champion in 1974.

65-5 is impressive considering that his first 3 were losses.

Rate of production & poor EROEI
  • It's illegal to drill in northern Alaska (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge), or off the coasts of Florida or California.

True... Again, rate of production and estimated quantity? (drop in the bucket)
  • Oil fields in Colorado are being shut down.

    So what?
  • We won't develop shale oil fields in the Western states

Not conventional oil. EROEI VERY poor.
  • It's illegal to explore in the Atlantic., Pacific, and Eastern Gulf of Mexico

Is there oil there? Poor geological indicators.
  • We're not receiving any more leases to drill in the Gulf of Mexico, while China, Venezuela and Cuba are.

So what... the areas are being drilled and we buy the oil. same/same
  • We haven't built an oil refinery in 25 years and reduced in half those we have

    30+ years. Oil is fungible.
  • There's enough natural gas beneath America (406 trillion cube feet) to heat every home in America for the next 150 years, but we can't tap it all.

    wrong
  • We have the largest supply of coal in the world, but it's Germany who is planning to build 27 coal-fired electrical plants by 2020.

So is China... so what? (does not solve for peak conventional oil)
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Thanks Aaron.

I know most of those things are true. Like you, my response is always "In the long run, those things really don't matter".

I guess the thing that worries me most is the attitude among the people promoting these "factoids" seems to be that the federal government will fix everthing if we give it more power and demand it.

We know fedgov can't fix the larger problem. But misunderstanding like Norris' help accelerate our transition to National Socialism.
