High mileage automobiles?

What's out there right now and what's new for 2009?

I've been eyeing up the Yaris.

Volkswagen has out some new diesel versions of existing models, called BlueMotion. Passat BlueMotion gets 54 miles/gallon on high way, 45 miles/gallon combined and 34,5 miles/gallon in city. This is EU tests. I dont know how that test compare to the US test

I bought a Yaris 3 door 5 speed last year and I love it. I average 40 mpg with it.

I recently read that in France the average mpg for passenger cars is 40+. Other European nations average close to that too. The Yaris gets something like 38 MPG. There are somewhere around 1 (Toyota Hybrid) models available in the USA that exceed the average MPG for France. If there's anything planned for 2009 I haven't heard of it. There might be one or two others, but basically the car makers are all ignoring the high mileage sector and instead marketing 'low mileage cars' as 'high mileage cars'. People are falling for it, so why not keep it up!

With $4.00 gas on now, and $7.00 gas expected in three years, one would expect the public to demand very high mileage personal vehicles, such as what's available in Europe, but that isn't happening... so you'll have to wait beyond 2009 model year, unless you're willing to accept low to average MPG ratings in the mid-30's... such as a Civic, Fit, or Yaris.

The highest mileage cars available in the USA are used cars. The Honda Civic VX, made from 1992 to 1995, the Geo/Chevy Metro, early 90s to 2001, especially the XFI version, the Honda Insight, and some of the VW TDI diesels. Nothing new, in the USA, gets much better than the high 30s on the highway, and with careful driving can get in the low 40s, but the Civic VX and the Metro XFI actually get 40 to 50+mpg in regular daily use. People that I know with Civic hybrids or the Prius don't do much better than that.

I owned a Metro back in the late 90's.

My current ride can get in the high 20's on the highway and it's a full size car too. I wish the Yaris could get 50+ MPG.

I think the Yaris is the best overall value right now.

It would be a nice little car even if it didn't get great mileage.

I am not going to drive a 1.1 ltr car until things get much worse.

Sorry, not gonna happen yet.

I'd love a V8 as well.

Liquid fuel is still, like it or not, very cheap.

How much is it for a cup again?

Best of all, 5 year unlimited mileage factory warranty.
Got a good write up in motoring press.

I want a V8 Jag, - but my next car will be something like the i10.

Welcome to the world of boring farty little cars folks !!

Gasmon

0-60 times arent meant to be measure in miles, but rather seconds.

1.1 liter. Sheesh.

*sigh*

I do like our Jetta TDI. A lot. Very nice car. Great gas milage, sold well built comfortable car. It seems to take a little bit of everything and roll it all up. Heated leather seats, snappy enough to be fun, handles well, confortable, good milage.
Its not the fastest, it isnt the most comfortable or get the best milage, but it is a great little car.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')ack in 1996 I bought a Dodge Ram Van, it was my primary vehicle until 2 years ago. 318 engine Back then it cost about $65.00 to fill it. At $1.25 per litre and 120 litre capacity it costs about $150.00 to fill it now after owning it for 11 years....sold the van few months ago....I was still using it to tow a tent trailer.
2 years ago I bought a 2004 Mini Cooper. At $1.25 /litre it costs about $65.00 to fill it... I imagine in less than 10 years it will probably cost about $150. to fill it...I imagine...my next vehicle will be a recumbent bike. namaste

you should strap a pup tent to a skateboard and you could tow it behind the Mini Cooper.

My parents had one of those 318 Dodge Vans as the family car back when I was growing up in the mid 90s. It was a big powerful gas guzzler that ate SUV's for lunch. It had a sofa bed in the back two other huge Lazy-boys plus TV-VCR and Super Nintendo. That van was pretty much the hight of consumerism in the heady days of the cheap gas era.

In the 70's Vans was cool. Everyone had one all fixed up, carpeted, with beds and cool sound systems. Great for picking up girls. I even had a propane heater in mine.

I have a honda civic hybrid and I get about 48 mpg. The trick is knowing how to drive it. I don't go more than 55 mph. I get some rude gestures but most people just blow past me.

I have an '05 Honda Accord 4 cylinder. I get ~32mpg on the highway driving a constant 70mph. Urban driving tends to knock the mileage to 25-27mpg.

In the winter the best I can get with a mix of city/highway driving is 25-28mpg.
