Better off without fossil fuels?

I’m no longer religious (I'm agnostic ) , but I was raised as a Catholic and I can’t help but look at the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and smile at the irony of it when looked at through my Peak Oil glasses. The biblical passage states:

Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

In the Peak Oil context the tree of knowledge is the exploitation of fossil fuels. For many years we’ve exploited other natural resources such as trees, but only fossil fuels allowed society to grow in the leaps and bounds that it has. Many moons ago I used to be of the opinion that mankind would never have been able to achieve any of the things that have been achieved without the benefit of fossil fuels. And, my reasoning went, in order for us to “evolveâ€

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('FatherOfTwo', '
')Would we have been better off living a more simple life, one dependent only on the energy from the sun (ala the Mayan’s et al.) or will we come through the age of fossil fuels with our leaps in education intact *and* with a planet that is still inhabitable?

What do you think?

A life based on the sun is fine - so long as there is slack in that system. The Mayan studies seem to show if there is no slack, when the yields drop, the society collapses.

If the planet remains inhabitable, then yes, many of the gains of education will remain.

A general slowing down is not a bad thing for man.

We would have been better off still swinging through the Miocene jungles. That the general consensus, I think, before this thing is played out.

Some us want (need) to think about it. Unfortunately I agree with you, its hard to say what would have been better. perhaps once we are through the end of this era we would be in a better position to say.

Unfortunately, we aren't finished with it, nor are we near the end. PO has allowed us to reach unparallelled heights in greed and destruction. Even if we hadn't gone the oil route, there is no guarantee something else wouldn't have been used instead.

but as I said we aren't at the end. we still have governments, scientists etc out of control. they haven't stopped gene splicing, genetically modifying our foods, or injecting our food animals with stuff.

given the me first attitude and the it to them, before they do it to us, that we see even on this board, i think we've been programmed to self-destruct and it aint gonna be pretty. but who is to say taht we wouldn't have anyway once this "civilization" had run its course.
