I've met a few. I agree, they're odd, but I find most people odd in one way or the other so I don't really hold that against them. :D I had a really cool science teacher who did some things with them, but I also had a rather STRANGE fellow classmate in French class who wanted to learn it for her "queen" LOL. But, that doesn't bother me too much because, as I said, most people are odd in at least one area of their behavior. It is the 100% normal ones that make me curious.

We were involved with a Jane Goodall group for a while...well, at least enough to do some fruit picking for a foodbank and learn how to make solar cookers. That was an interesting bunch, too.

I'm shopping around for a historical society, etc. that does some replicas of old things. I have to admit, I have a natural interest in it anyway, so PO has only a little to do with it. My sons and I like making generators, rubber band cars, paper match rockets, etc.

Does anyone know of any other hobbyist groups that specialize in making/using replicas in the southwest?

edit to add: my interest is in being involved with making or using old tech to see what really goes into it. I'm curious, particularly if some of the more modern versions fall out of fashion.

Ever heard of the book Backyard Ballistics? My older boy loves it (so do I), and it has instructions for a trebuchet.

(This is where I may be odd, though. Or maybe boring. I enjoy sitting around winding wires for motors or trying to build trebuchets for no apparent reason.)

Had friends back in the city that joined. They had a lot of fun, and actually ended up making some "old fashioned" stuff that they put to use.

You'll probably enjoy it -- the whole family.

Ohmy sweet Lord! That society just popped into my head, I swear 5 seconds before I logged on here! I've thought of this group a total of 10 times in my life. I was thinking that people want, need to return to the past, not just for sustainability, but for their own sheer delight...then I thought, that's it, that's what SCA does, (sort of). Then logged on to your thread the very next moment. I didn't realize SCA stood for Soc for creative anachronism.

I met one of those guys who wanted me to make him some armor for their King Richard's Fair event. He had a buddy who was a rat catcher, and another who cooked there. This guy's day job was investment broker. Always knew those finance people were a couple sandwiches shy of a good picnic. But, VERY bright people, indeed.

I always like going to the Ren Fest here, I have since I was a kid. Of course, I understand it is kind of a fictionalized version of the time period, but still, there are some things they do that are really neat (glass blowers, etc. at the Ren Fest).

It is kind of like RPG and videogamers...some are just positively weird over it, but others just enjoy it because they are bright and it keeps them entertained/busy. No harm there.

These people will be our salvation when these skills are needed. Not many people know how to weave cloth, or make tents, or make knives anymore ...

The blacksmith's groups, gardener's, glassworkers, hand furniture makers, well diggers (very few), potters, tanners, etc., are crucial to our children's future. I've done a lot of metal and wood working, built buildings, split shakes for the roof, pegged joints, made chisels, knives, and built a small 2 shed loom once, even tried my hand at refining clay for pottery, and was once a pretty fair hand with a broadaxe and adze, but the need for such skills and the depth of experience required to be effective, is awesome.

This group would do well to make an effort at preserving these skills. They are still in existence, but very hard to find. I applaud all efforts to keep them alive.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('patience', 'w')ell diggers.

Good luck hand-digging a well down to our lowered water tables and depleted aquifers!

Wells used to be 50 feet deep, often less. Now, 200 - 1000 ft wells are common throughout the country.

No kidding, still, as a wearer of glasses, I appreciate this information:

CA0001 (7/82) Medieval and Renaissance Eyeglasses -- Their History and Construction $4.50

Not that I may live long enough to use it...should things get THAT bad.
