Nalgene to phase out hard-plastic bottles

Containers made with bisphenol A chemical linked to health risks
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Hard-plastic Nalgene water bottles made with bisphenol A will be pulled from stores over the next few months because of growing consumer concern over whether the chemical poses a health risk. …
With more than 6 million pounds produced in the United States each year, bisphenol A is found in dental sealants, baby bottles, the liners of food cans, CDs and DVDs, eyeglasses and hundreds of household goods. The chemical has been linked to neurological and behavioral problems in infants and babies, along with certain cancers, diabetes and obesity. …
But critics point to an influx of animal studies linking low doses to a wide variety of ailments — from breast and prostate cancer, obesity and hyperactivity, to miscarriages and other reproductive failures. …

I'm not sure what I think about the BPA controversy. There is a potential concern here, but the evidence is conflicting. Some say that the amounts of BPA are minuscule and only harmful if the liquid is heated well above normal use, to the point where the bottle nearly melts. Others say that any amount of BPA is detrimental. Obviously both groups have agendas, but I've noticed that government organizations have really been pushing the claim that BPA is safe. Is this based on valid study or is this to cover their ass? Who really knows. I use and like the Nalgene-type bottles, so I hope they find a suitable replacement. I haven't thrown mine out yet, but considering how cheap they are to replace, I might do so as a precaution.

You could always just stop using it for a while and see if the health risks turn out to be minimal. Then you can start using it again.

No sense throwing it out only to buy a new one in 3 months.

To heck with throwing them out, I want store credit at REI.

It's a shame because nalgene is tough, light, and easy to clean. I love nalgene bottles. Maybe it will evolve into a "vice" like big steaks, cigarettes, or cheesecake.
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

I have to be skeptical of the studies, specifically at what % were the lab animals exposed to BPA. "Low doses" tell me nothing.

Also, is there a polycarbonate type available that doesn't contain BPA?

There is a newer replacement called Triton that does not contain BPA. I've seen only minimal information so far on Triton. Wikipedia doesn't seem to have an entry yet. I have no idea if it will be as sturdy as the classic BPA Nalgene containers (those things are nearly indestructible). And who knows... 7 years from now we'll probably hear about the dangers of Triton.

Interesting. Now would be as good time as any to consider bioengineered substitutes to these plastics, if only to wean ourselves off of using petroleum for such things. If it means a $12 Nalgene bottle, so be it.

Assuming bisphenol gets stored in the body, it can take years for possibility of cancer to form.

Use glass bottles.

But this replacement better have easily recyclable as requirement. For containers why not glass or metal? ...food tastes different if refrigerated, heated or stored in glass and metal compared to plastic.

I made a mistake in my last post. It is Tritan, not Triton. Apparently it is made by the Eastman company.
