Info about human powered electricity!?

Unread postby Narz » Wed 09 Apr 2008, 17:31:13

Who's the one with the avatar of a guy riding a bike generating power? SolarDave?

Anyone with info on how to make this realistically viable (enough juice to run an energy efficient apartment)?

I want to answer a girl's questions about this on another forum : http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthrea ... ost6698781

And also, for my own information. I honestly do think it would be among the coolest things in my recent personal history if I could power my home with a rowing machine (and get my ass in shape in the process).

Thanks! :)

Found this too : http://peswiki.com/energy/Directory:Human-Powered

Pretty cool directory though probably not near comprehensive.

It's an interesting idea, but the more electricity you create with muscle work, the more energy you need as nutrition... If food becomes scarce, everyone will have to ponder carefully which end-use pays off best.

It looks like it would be difficult to do more than intermittently run a small appliance..

I've had this image in my head of a makeshift human energy plant where masses of jobless people pedal their bikes to generate electricity for some project that needs power than what can be provided by the ever-declining regular energy base.

So instead of the proverbial squirrels on treadmills, it would be a bunch of unemployed people on stationary bikes?

Nice.

I would love to see the EROEI for something like that, especially if you had peddlers who were picky eaters.

Hi, Yes, that's me.

I ride that pedal generator EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I lost 35 lbs in two years riding that thing!
I power a live webcast almost every weekday morning between 8:00-8:30 AM Pacific time - come ask me questions...

Pedal Powered Webcast from Green Virtual Gym

I sell plans on that site for people to build their own (actually, I sell support and construction assistance, and include a free set of plans with it ;-)

I am in such good shape now (at 55 years old) I can ride my bicycle hard for 30 miles and not feel it the next day - not true 2 years ago!

I drive less and ride my bicycle more!
I have more energy!
I have not been sick for almost two years!
I ride to cheer up, to keep warm, to read books and magazines, to webcast, and to charge every rechargeable battery and device in my universe. Last weekend I topped off my eGo electric moped. Then I topped off the battery in the car I only drive once a month.

I have not sold a single set of plans (that I know of) to any of the "regulars" on this site. What does that tell ya?

It tells me we are not at peak oil - yet. I'm just patiently waiting.....

:-D
100% of the electricity needed for this post was generated by ME.

I have often thought that it would be a great idea for those collecting unemployment insurance to have to report each day to a big hall where they'd punch in and sit in silence each day for 8 hours and then punch out at the end of the day. If they had job interview appointments, they'd be excused. Adding this electric generation idea would only make people much more accepting of jobs otherwise beneath their pride level.
