What can you do with a nail file or nail clippers?

Unread postby shakespear1 » Sat 08 Mar 2008, 10:20:48

What can you do with these items on a plane? Nothing in my opinion, at least little that is of obvious danger. So why focus on these things when you board a plane?

I pondered this question and have come to the conclusion that the sole purpose is to put a large majority of the travelers under the microscope which then leads to heightening their tension. Through this mechanism one subtly modifies their perception of the world. In a negative way, toward a feeling of danger :-(

You certainly are not free to give manicures unless you apply for and are issued a license. Maybe that's what it's about.

Someone should do a matrix-style over the top gore fest parody where guy armed only with nail clippers brutally slaughters 100 people in under 10 minutes - on an airplane!

What a joke, I mean seriously, they let you bring ipods, cd players and such right? You ever break a cd? Damn those things are sharp. I cut the heck out of my hand just trying to break some up to throw out! Ban CD's! Deadly Weapon!

I was just packing for a trip and was looking at those stupid things that you have in a toiletry bag. Well the nail file certainly is useless and yet not once did I see a big stink made about it.

"Mam, please deposit that item in this box. You may not have this item on board the plane"

It is all done politely but upon deeper reflection show pure paranoia. Not once have I been on Air France flights where lole and behold, they give you a METAL KNIFE. Yes, I repeat, A METAL KNIFE !!!!

Another obvious "flaw" is that there are zero-consequences for trying. Suppose someone actually did have a liquid explosive. There is no penalty for attempting to smuggle it inside a shampoo bottle. If you are caught, the explosive is (haphazardly, since nobody actually believes there is a threat) thrown into a bin with all the others. And then you try again next time. Eventually you will get through.

There's definitely a paranoid element to it, but I think fundamentally it's about training the population to follow orders no matter how senseless and bizare. It's become this huge game of Simon Says.

"Simon says put your hand gel in a ziplock bag."

"Aww come on. It's one 2oz bottle. It's obviously less than a quart."

"Simon says!"

"OK fine."

"Simon says put your laptop battery in a ziplock bag too."

"What are you guys getting a kickback from the ziplock company?"

"SIMON SAYS!"

"Ok fine."

"Simon says take off your shoes and your jacket."

"You can't be serious. My shoes?"

"SIMON SAYS!!!! SIMON SAYS!!!"

"Ok fine. Here's my shoes."

I think this article fits nicely in here

Rights

This part is scary

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'RFID chips have been embedded on every packet of cigarettes manufactured in the UK since October last year, while others have been fitted to trash cans officially to boost the rate of garbage recycling. Pets entering Britain from abroad are also chipped.')

You may also find this one a doozer

You don't have to kill 100 people, just a couple. And it has to be loud, brutal and bloody. The rest panic and fall in line, because nobody wants to be next. It's a Special Forces tactic. How else would terrorists be able to take a plane with box cutters?

Although now with locked cockpit doors, what pilot is going to let them in no matter what a nail-file-armed assailant is doing? The societal impact is low if the plane can't be a flying bomb.

Of course you realize I meant that should be done as a joke film not actually DONE.

The total absurdity of all this security of course is that now the masses in the plane will assume they are going to be killed anyways so why not throw themselves en masse at the one wielding the deadly nail clippers. So its a pointless tactic now...

You guys actually let them find your goods?

I smuggle as much contraband onto airplanes as possible. Worst case scenario, they just take it and throw it away.

I smuggled a few shots of vodka in those travel-sized shampoo bottles onto a US Airways flight to Phoenix. Do they really expect me to sit still for 6 hours in a middle seat with Paycheck as the in flight movie. Are they freaking serious?

Flying back from Belize I loaded up on hot sauce. They stole my sister's bottle but I managed to get 3 of them back to that states.

Trust me, it's all about the cargo pants.

It was worth the risk. :)

How many of you have had your stockings patted down? Or had the cavity inside the wheeled luggage handle inspected? Or had your armpits squeezed?

There are still a few tricks left. Cargo pants are very good too. It's amazing how rarely the many pockets are inspected.

We should move into the international smuggling business. I think we'd make a good team.

Of course, peak oil will make plane tickets pricey, cutting into our profits. 8)
