GREENSBORO, N.C. –“Manufactured Landscapes,” Jennifer Baichwal’s sweeping documentary that chronicles changes in the Chinese landscape caused by the impact of industry and manufacturing, will be shown on Thursday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the Weatherspoon Art Museum auditorium.
The film is part of UNCG’s year-long sustainability film series.
"Manufactured Landscapes" follows Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky as he travels through China shooting the dizzying effects of the country’s massive industrial revolution. Known for his large-scale photographs of factories, huge industrial dumps, workers breaking down ships with crude tools, strip mines and dams, Burtynsky shows how the rapid pace of industrialization is causing degradation of both the physical and human landscape.
In one of the film’s most powerful sequences, Burtynsky visits the site of China’s Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydroelectric project and the country’s biggest construction effort since the Great Wall. The controversial project, which has been estimated to have displaced over one million people, will have devastating environmental consequences due to water pollution behind the massive dam, according to environmentalists..
The final film in the Sustainability Series, “Wild Caught,” UNCG professor Matt Barr’s documentary about challenges to North Carolina fishing communities, will be shown on April 10.
The series is sponsored by the UNCG sustainability committee, the Sierra Club and Deep Roots Market. The public is welcome at no charge for all films.
