Need PO's help for a science fair project

Unread postby Specop_007 » Tue 21 Dec 2004, 01:09:49

My 2nd grader has a science fair coming up. I'd like to do something somehow related to PO without looking like a freakoid survivalist doomsayer to all the other parents in the area.
Consider this a brainstorming session. Thoughts?

I was thinking of doing something related to acid rain and showing how burning coal causes acid rain. While not entirely PO, it does give light to our dependence on non renewable resources and show the harmful affects they may have.

Buring coal also puts radiation into the environment. At a rate higher than nuke plants (when not melted down)

Consider:
Biodiesel
Distilling Ethanol

Although a working still might not be seen as a 'good project' - might need Mom's help.

Yeah, the working still might not be such a good idea.....

Other than the toxic nature of methonal, sure. You COULD de-water ethonal - then you'd have the normal toxic nature of concentrated yeast fecal material.

Up side - offer up the resulting soap.

Since when do parents do science fair projects for their kids?

Maybe the parent needs to pass 2nd grade, but I think you will fail parenting.

Technically, unless the child makes the pot for the plant and harvests the seeds for a plant-science-test, the child HAS gotten adult help.

Same with "here is how coal makes acid raid" - who did the "work" (creation of data) Adults.

Having the 2nd gradder mix the biodiesel (the NaOH/Methonal part) is not a good idea due to the toxic nature.

Having the 2nd gradder write about the steps and the samples of the step WOULD involve the adult(s), but also involve the child.

If your not actually a freakoid survivalist doomsayer, you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Grandpa', 'S')o, what is you goal in raising your child?

Apparently the EXACT opposite of yours!!
My goal is to be involved, raise my child(ren) on my own, not view TV as a nanny and public education as a babysitter, teach my child things outside of what they learn at school and help build thier confidence and curiosity in the world around them.
Opposite of most people today who want children to just walk around as mindless zombies in a socialist state.

My goal was to raise children who were highly capable of living successful lives. This meant letting them learn how to run their own lives, fostering a sense of self worth and being loved and admired, and encouraging values that serve life.

Children are born with the drive for independence. A parent only needs to walk the line between encouraging this drive and providing necessary protection until the child is able to take over completely.

We never had rebellion problems because there was little for our children to rebel against. We always encouraged our children to make their own choices, buyt we acted as sounding boards when they needed help. Other parents thought we were overly lenient, but in fact what we did worked, and our children were and are happy and successful in their lives, both by our standards and theirs, and they love us and want to be involved in our lives and want us involved in their adult lives.

We certainly would never have considered doing a science project for our children or even choosing the subject matter. We would have given help only if it was incidental. I mentioned this issue today in a phone converstaion to one of my daughters who is a teacher herself, and has a second grader herself. She laughed cause her son just did a project for school building an Indian village out of cardboard. She said that you could tell that his project was done by him while most of his classmates' villages had a degree of perfection clearly not attainable by second graders. I wonder how many of these children will grow up to be highly capable adults, since part of the process of learning to live one's life is to practice living it under the watchful eyes of loving parents.

Good way to do it, we're pretty much the same. Difference is, I like to guide them a bit. Show them the path then let them walk it. You assumed too much to begin with, and most likely still do.
On a side note, you must absolutely hate the way schools have turned in the past few years.

Maybe I did not read what you said in your initial post.

Then when I asked your your goal as a parent you gave an answer that indicated that you clearly did not get the function of an excellent parent.

From my take I give you and your project a failing grade. I also wonder why you are pretending to not be an overcontrolling parent.

Too bad to be so blunt, but here is a test of you versus me; if you and your progeny survive the first wave down in the dieoff, look to see if your children bother to be in your life. Did they accept or reject you as a human being?

Naturally of course you fully understand the function of a excellent parent right..... How ironic that is.

Am I an excellent parent? Nope. But I consider myself better then most of those around me that I see.
