The Lives Of Others

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Wed 21 Nov 2007, 22:54:42

A German film dealing with the nightmare of the Stasi Secret Police. The Nazis only had a decade or so to rule by terror. The Communists ruled for nearly half a century. A very poignant movie. The thing that worries me the most is that it's coming to a theater near you and me. This seemed to me like a movie to try and deal with some very unpleasant things, a German attempt to heal. But with what's coming, I fear no healing will be possible.

Das Lieben Der Anderen
I watched it in German with my german friends a few months ago. Great film, sad ending. I really enjoyed it! The building where the man starts to go through files at the end to find out about German spy techniques is a real building and was actually used for that very purpose. My friend Wolfgang has a few friends in Germany who had found files on themselves after the wall came down.

Yeah, it's a good movie. I didn't regard the ending as being particularly sad though. The writer dedicates his novel to a former Stasi agent who had a crisis of confidence in the police state. Seems to me like a nice Hollywood ending, compared to what's coming. Btw, I had a nice conversation with my brother who I hadn't spoken with since the fires in October. We set up a meeting with him and his wife and my kids and I. It was fun talking with him and then he mentioned The History Channel. I said, oh by the way, they had a recent special on the oil fiasco, but I don't suppose you want to talk about that. Sure enough he said no. He's not going to talk about that until it bites him on the ass, if ever.

I had a conversation along those lines with an uncle of mine a couple of months ago. He is fairly wealthy and thinks the market can fix anything. Anyway, our talk got a little heated and I didn't like the tone I took with my uncle at one point. I have hereby resolved to not do that again; I really regret it. A couple of days before that he had taken me out for lunch and we had such a nice visit. From now on, I'll exchange information with people but not get into a big debate about it. Live and learn.

By the way, Happy Thanksgiving to you.

We have an old joke about this.

How many Stasi agents are in East German in four-member family?
Five, you always have to include their dog.
Peak oil is only an indication and a premise of limits to growth on a finite planet.
Denial is the most predictable of all human responses.

The Stasi are on the rise here in the UK, if not already here. We are the world's foremost police state.
