This is a perfect example why the term 'green' has lost all positive meaning and why there is no further hope for Western Civilization.

We've all now decayed into a great big feeding frenzy and this 21 mpg monstrosity is the main course of the dining hall for 2008.

Is there anyone around here who still uses that term??

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')uman beings are extremely creative when they want to be. That includes being psychologically creative. That includes being creative about constructing defense and denial mechanisms that serve to keep them numb and asleep. They seal off accurate knowledge about the world just as they’ve sealed off a thousand other real and unreal images that they’ve been exposed to via the media. They relegate the feelings that arise when confronted by the four horsemen of This Apocalypse to the same realms they relegate feelings elicited by Stephen King’s fiction, by terrifying dreams, and by the boogey man under the bed. They unwittingly label this documentary the way they labeled The Shining: Just Another Horror Movie. And, having filed the experience away, they then go back to sleep. They step into the fantasy that “green business” is selling: the solution to our environmental and social and resource problems is to be good consumers and to buy more stuff, green stuff. After all, people vote with their dollars don’t they? Wow, lacking real elections this is the deal: You can vote by spending! So the more you spend the more powerful you are. Wow. This is great! We can step into our powerful identities as consumers and accept our full responsibility as citizens. We get to vote every day we buy something. What a great fantasy: the destruction of the world will be stopped by spending more money.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')ne can admire how Chevron is going green! One can fantasize about someday living in that wonderful solar heated, natural green home of 3-5 thousand square feet, with imported rugs on comfy, cozy, water-heated slab floors. And that next bedspread? Well, do consider hemp! That will make a real difference. Best of all, considering the time of year, it’s time to vow to make it a Green Christmas: buy beeswax candles and exotic fruit baskets and yoga mats. Buy imported things and support indigenous cultures. Buy big things and small things, green things and live things. And in so buying, we can all pretend that things will get better. That things are getting better. All one need to do is shop correctly. After all, shopping is fun. And stopping the destruction of the world should be fun.

I thought green cars were suppose to cut down on emissions and gas guzzling. 10 years ago this mileage was the typical

WHAT THE FUCK HAS CHANGED!!!!!!

When I was in high school and I first started hearing about hybrids they were all being touted as cars that get 60 - 80 MPG minimum.

Average cars they release nowadays that "aren't hybrids" only get 15 MPG when 10 years ago they all got 30 MPG now these "new" hybrid cars get 28 - 30 and they are now suppose to be green!!! WTF!!!

Fucking oil companies and car companies working together to kill the planet.

We'll probably hear them calling for green nukes at some point. Most likely it will be for sustainable green nukes.

Illustrious panel of judges they got there.

SUVs will make for handy homeless shelters soon enough. As it stands they continue to make far more money than more affordable cars so what can you do?

My first car was a '78 Mazda GLC Sport that when I acquired it in 1982 got 40+ MPG.

You can see an advertisement for it here

GLC Sport Add

Didn't have AC but it was really fun to drive. Basically a really light car with a small engine.

That was the car for which the manufacturers invited internet users to make their own ads, isn't it?

As a lad, I drove a Corvair. Only one bolt kept the engine where it was supposed to be. Sure enough, that bolt failed and my engine fell out. But eastbay, here's something to make you even sicker: sustainability, sustainability, sustainability. heh heh.

The original Honda Civic weighed 1415 pounds. The current version, which I have one of, weighs over 2900 pounds.

Honda has responded to the market, of course, and has given us exactly what we want. They also offered the 60 MPG Insight, which nobody wanted, and has been cancelled because of lack of sales.

PMS,

I am green with envy at that (usually) wonderful and sustainable humor of yours a hybrid version of which you nicely tossed in the posting previous to this.

Dude, what you wrote was funny. I mean, not exatly a gut-buster, but still very funny. :)

I was just laughing at the new ford hybrid escape commercials. It gets 34 mpg. If I remember correctly Jeep has a diesel grand cherokee that gets 30 mpg. I'm sure the good old diesel is far more useful if you are into towing or hauling then the hybrid as well it's ancient technology that is understood by most mechanics. These new hybrids are a pathetic attempt.

At the moment my wife has the company prius. It works great around town but not so great on the highway. A VW TDI would be better and cheaper on the highway. How hard is it for a big auto company to make a diesel hybrid that gets the best of both worlds? How about an all electric car using a diesel generator to keep the batteries topped up that lets you plug in at night? My best guess is any major manufacturer could have a prototype on the road in less then 6 months. They have zero interest in this type of move however so screw them.

Oh yes bonehead, it'll sell quite well in a 'green' town to a 'green' family who will park it in a 2,000 sq ft 'green' garage attached to a 3,000 sq ft 'green' house.

Then this happy 'green' family will buy 'socially conscious' 'sustainable' 'green' bio fuel for their 'sustainable' 'green' SUV thereby contributing to 'green' food riots in not-too-'green' Third World nations.

Correction: Make that 'sustainable' food riots first, then 'sustainable' starvation. Immediately followed by the Four Horsemen's first meals.

But mommy needs an SUV, so whatta ya gonna do?

Didn't you all realise the game was up when they started calling biofuel run cars and hybrids as being environmentally friendly vehicles.

I suppose if they labelled them as beingless environmentally destructive vehicles it wouldn't have the same ring to it.

I'm sick of all the hypocritical "greenwashing" which runs rampant in the mass media. The full-size hybrid SUV is a great example. But what gets me is that we're supposed to be eco-friendly and still have speed limits of 70 mph (or more.) All these millions spent by corporations and government for all this green propaganda has been a waste.

Preaching easier driving habits, and lowering speed limits would help a lot more than seeing Kermit the Frog on "Deal or No Deal." (saw a replay on CNBC during NBC Universal's green week.) A quick little message at the end of a television program, suggesting that people check their tire pressure once a week, maintain a safe following distance in traffic, observe the speed limit, combine errands and plan an efficient route would be a better start than this current hybrid vehicle advertising blitz.

Bob Barker's been throwing that "Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered" line on the end of his game show for decades! How hard would it be to get Howie Mandel, Alex Trebek, or any other host to say "Next time you fuel, check your tire pressure."?
