Not looking good. Reading some posts over on the weather forums and some think this thing can still hit the low lying country. We could see huge death toll if this thing hits the right area. Sad knowing that a lot of these people have no way to get out of harms way.

Most of that country is VERY low lying.

ouch, that's gonna hurt :(

And yes, the country is a sort of "sister" - country to Holland, and half of it is only a couple of meters above sealevel. It's also a big delta area, so on top of the storm all the rain this sucker is gonna drop will flow right back into Bangladesh, adding to the impending misery. Also with a 150 million people (2,700 sq/mile) it's by far the most densily populated country apart from the city states of this world.

this is going to be a 100 times New Orleans, if not more....

Can't find any MSM links either. I guess this doesn't sell advertisements :x

edit:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')HAKA, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Bangladesh and eastern India went on cyclone alert on Wednesday and ships were turned back to port as a severe storm in the Bay of Bengal was expected to make landfall in the next two days.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the storm with winds of around 185 km (115 miles) per hour was some 850 km (531 miles) off the coast at 0300 GMT on Wednesday.

"It is likely to intensify and move in a northerly direction and may make a landfall at the Sundarban mangroves," a meteorologist said.

He said the storm was expected to hit Vishakapatnam on the eastern Indian coast as well as Sittewe in Myanmar.

"This is a very serious cyclone," said B.P. Yadav, director of the India Meteorological Department, adding that he expected the storm to cross the coast of Bangladesh and the neighbouring Indian state of West Bengal by Friday morning, near Sagar Island.

Eastern Weather

If there was a school shooting, it would be all over the news, but if its just some huge cyclone bearing down on an overpopulated, low lying, poor country....... pathetic.

Bangladesh Cyclone, November 1970. The greatest tropical system disaster this century occurred in Bangladesh in November 1970. Winds coupled with a storm surge killed between 300,000- 500,000people. These cyclones usually cause the most misery, loss of life, and suffering in low lying areas in Bangladesh and coastal India.

Bangladesh Cyclone 02B, April 1991. Another cyclone struck the Chittagong region in Bangladesh in 1991 killing over 138,000 people and causing damage in excess of 1.5 billion dollars. The tropical cyclone devastated the coastal area southeast of Dacca with winds in excess of 130kts and a 20 foot storm surge.

Is Pakistan in overshoot? (Yes.)

Does there need to be an adjustment - a dieoff? (Yes.)

And a cyclone is likely to address this issue? (Looks like.)

So...what's the problem?

We talk about die-off. We seem to have some degree of consensus that it's coming.

So if a "low lying, poor country" gets hammered we should...party! [smilie=occasion14.gif] [smilie=occasion16.gif] [smilie=eusa_clap.gif]

How much oil does the average person in Bangladesh use? Tropical country (no heat/no ac) and they probably burn wood? for cooking. I doubt too many have cars.

The country IS overpopulated. Someone mentioned its smaller then Illinois but has 150 million people.
lawns should be outlawed.

I guess that's the problem of playing with pentagrams...you never know what what might come through.

The trouble is, people like me will be in demand. For you see, with shortages will come conflict. And those not eager to dirty their hands will seek out others who are less fastidious.

I think you will find the coming realities distressing. Perhaps you should pick up a few black candles of your own?

Hey Jack even for you a tad insensitive. Yes people are going to die, a lot of them, ~4 billion of them eventually if what you and I seem to think is likely happens. And yes if you breed yourself into overshoot then you only deserve limited sympathy. But I find no cause for celebration flippant or otherwise.

I still think John Donne got it right.
No man is an island, entire of itself;
every man is a piece of the continent,
a part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,
as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or
of thine own were:
any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind,
and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls;
it tolls for thee.

While I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with what Jack says, I would like to point out that what we are behind the computer screens is not necessarily who we say we are.

Just as studies prove that biggest homophobic macho dudes are often gay themselves (link) those who present a tough, un-empathetic facade, are often quite the opposite.

Who is to say what the person behind his on screen persona is like? For all we know Jack could be a nerdy 15 year old boy.

Talk is cheap. It's easy to be tough behind the computer.
