Revolting Burmese Monks

What's on your mind?
General interest discussions, not necessarily related to depletion.

What is your reaction to the crushed rebellion?

This is tragic. Peaceful, nonviolent people have been hurt and killed.

Revolting Burmese Monks

Unread postby Jack » Tue 02 Oct 2007, 17:03:58

It's been far too long since last I created one of my polls - it's time to correct that situation.

As most will recall, a group of Buddhist monks in Burma attempted to lead a revolution against the ruling military establishment. It appears that the attempt has been squelched.

So - what can we conclude about the revolt?

Well Jack, from the Gandalf, happy-clappy brigade POV (grin) we can roughly figure that if you let a load of (gun-toting) lunatics take over the asylum, strangely enough, it doesn't work any better.

That's all it proves.

Oh yea, and also couple of quotes from Mahatma Gandhi that might prove relevent (grin):

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall — think of it, always."

Ditto, JPL. Love and light always win, in the end. YOu can let your life contract to a dark dot, or you can be radiant. It's an energy issue. Truly.

When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of deceit and darkness has always won. There have been peacemakers and saviors and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall - think of it, always.

I'm torn between these two

A) Nonviolence only works against weaklings. The generals weren't weak.

B) Jack, the dieoff is coming, and I want to be a sociopath too!

I was going to say the same thing. It is an endless cycle. And to find where we are headed on this continuum, look at where we recently were. An era of peace is ending, an era of violence is beginning. Considering the length and amplitude of the cycles, we're screwed.

I'm not sure of your point here, JP, but I want to try it too:

Jack smacks back at every sad sack
Jack the hack in expensive slacks
Jack has the knack for talking smack
The heart is black in Jack the Hack
And a duck is a duck if it quacks the quack

Well

My immediate reaction to the suppressing of the revolt was "Sh.t Happens".

The generals must be quaking in their boots at the thought of a UN resolution being sent their way.

Actually it's kind of fun.

When the Martians came they said Ack Ack
And just like Jack gave humans flack
Got your back when they attack
But Jack is Jack is how they stack

PMS said f**k all that
And also, then, "now take this crap"
Jack went 'crack' & 'whoosh' & bang
And PMS he dived head-long
Into trenches long forsaken
And then he said, "I'll wake the Kraken!"

My Apcopolypse is long forgotten
But you at least, are dead & rotten.

And so we all so do long forget
What awful things we did beget - when last we slept.

JPL and PMS, poets both. The last attempt I made involved downloading a computer program and hitting the enter key. The results were interesting but not very good.

As to Ghandi...interesting case, that. He seems to have been the seed for the subsequent non-violence movement. The point at issue is whether his actions (and subsequent success) were a model for other such movements, or a special case. I contend the latter.

The British and the US aren't willing to slaughter lots of unarmed people, so nonviolence was an effective strategy. The events in Burma hint that the concept cannot be applied everywhere.

I suspect this has implications for the future.

Oh, I've got to do some more of this, it's just too fun:

Can't cut no slack when you're on track
The game is on and Jack is back
Monks are toast, meat on the rack
I hope my views don't catch much flack
So many words that end in 'ack'.
Perhaps we bring this back to Jack.

The words are many and never lack. It's time for me to have a snack. I'll see you later and I'll be back.

I'm glad I live in a country where I don't have to fear the (non-existant) army of my own country (that goes for USA too).

This year I'm becoming more decided that there's a f*ing way out.

I am not certain either Jack, but I think Ghandi is a very interesting model for our times as well. Somehow he broke the mould.
