A day in the not too distant future:
Here comes the bus; five minutes early no less. It's nice to catch any kind of break these days, and maybe this one will mark the start of a happy run of circumstances.
Now that I think of it; even though it's colder this morning that yesterday the air is dry and hardly moving, unlike that biting sleet from yesterday. The ice even has that sticky quality that only comes on the bitterest of days when your footsteps have the unique *squeak* against the thin layer of snow covering the ice.
Yes, I think maybe today will be a good day. There's a mountain of work to be done at the shoe factory in Endicott and we'll need every bit of good fortune we can muster to get through the days production plan.
We're so fortunate that enough of the old Endicott and Johnson shoemakers were still alive when the Asian imports stopped three years ago. It didn't take too long before there was plenty of bare feet and fresh demand for shoes and these old guys jumped right in and helped us launch the factory. We're still using mostly hand labor as the heavy production equipment was all shipped to Asia twenty years ago, but our numbers are climbing and there is no end to demand. Life is good, I guess. At least here it's ok.
There hasn't been much news from LA since the race wars got into full swing two years ago. Man that was an ugly scene that never stopped. Every week a new city in turmoil for various reasons and always sides being chosen over race and class. Those that chose an homogeneous environment ended up a lot healthier than those that stayed in the "melting pots".
I bet today is the day my new bicycle wheel will finally show up and I can ride to work instead of waiting for this damn bus. It's an easy ride straight down the interstate twelve miles. Yes, I know it's restricted to commercial traffic only now, but there's precious little of that. No one will bother me . . . I hope.
Yes, today is a good day.
