GM Workers on Strike

Unread postby Byron100 » Mon 24 Sep 2007, 13:02:22

Breaking news - The rank-and-file at General Motors is now on the picket line.

GM Strike

Could this the beginning of the end of GM? Looks like the workers aren't going down without a fight, that's for sure...

I wonder what the employees are thinking. I haven't heard much about GM lately, how are their finances? Are they still on the verge of bankruptcy?

The End began a long time ago. It will take a long time to play out. This is merely a rearrangment of the deck chairs.

51 Billion dollars is more than GM's current market capitalization. Good luck with cashing that check UAW.

You can be greedy if you sell products people want to buy. Sadly, that 's not the case here. All the greed on both sides, none of the products.

The company is already dead, this is just part of the long process.

My guess? This is just posturing. I'll be the UAW has the best deal they know they can get (and it's not a great one). They'll let the rank and file strike for a couple days (to see if they can't get another few million) then put the deal to a vote over the weekend.

Heck, GM is probably excited not to have to make cars for a week.

Note: The above is total conjecture and probably wrong, but it's an interesting take on things.

And yes, it's probably the death knell of organized American labor.

it is always bizarre the way the unions go out on strike when the industry is in difficulty. happened in the Uk in 70's and all it did was make the car companies go under! if the union had sense they would look at ways to halve the workforce and reduce the pension issues etc to give GM a chance.

Having owned a 1970 MGB, I might be able to suggest other reasons why British Leyland, in particular, went under.

If GM goes down because of the strike it will greatly affect health care in the US. Expect universal health care to be enacted, expect folks to be greatly surprised with what they get. SOME care for all, but not the All care for all that seems promised. American car manufacters are health care systems with incredible benefits, that happen to also make cars.

As a loyal member of a different union I think the leadership of the UAW needs medication. This is not 1969 with the USA being the worlds largest petroleum producer! GM could say tomorrow "Ho hum, OK everyone in the UAW is fired, job applications will be accepted immediatly at the pay rate of $14.00 with no health insurance, take it or leave it." They would have 140,000 applicants for the 70,000 job openings by the weekend.

A general strike now is begging for a union busting move, what the hell are they thinking?
