Crime

Unread postby Falconoffury » Thu 30 Aug 2007, 22:50:20

How is the crime in your part of the world these days? Here in South Florida, it looks to be definitely on the rise. Just last week, I noticed someone had tampered with the lock on my back door. About a month ago, a few businesses in the building where I work were burglarized. Computers and other electronic equipment was stolen. I think they skipped the suites where I work because they saw the security cameras. A few days later I overheard some people talking about how somebody had his laptop computer stolen out of his car in the parking lot.

The crash has hardly begun, and I'm seeing more crime in one month than I've ever seen. Just shows how shitty of a place Florida will be. Some parts of Miami look like a 3rd world country. Central and Northern Florida seem to be much better. I hope I can get out there before it is too late.

Not only crime, but drug use has absolutely skyrocketed in my area; especially crack and pot. Signs of the times?

When I lived in Port Charlotte ( s.w. fl. ) 2 years ago crime was pretty bad . We lived in a nice suburban neighborhood and my daughters bike was stolen right out of our driveway . Drugs everywhere but you expect it in a city that size . Lee cnty. GA. has 1 problem and that's bad checks and teenagers smoking weed of course . Albany Ga. has the full gamut , murder , robbery etc. but again it's a pretty big city.
Perhaps the population would be less swayed to socialism if we had fewer examples of socialism from our "Free Market Capitalists". -----fiddler dave

My house was burglarized 4 times over a period of years. It turned out to be the same kid who is no longer a kid. He was somebody we knew. One little pecker wood can cause a crime wave all by himself. Things have been pretty quiet since he went to prison. Small town south Florida.

It has been a fair number of months, so I thought I would revisit this subject.

Since then, there have been 2 cop shootings in South Florida that I remember. Here is an article on one.

4 cops shot, 1 killed

The other I recall involved a cop escorting an elderly prisoner. The prisoner pulled the cop's gun and shot him with it. I couldn't find the article.

So, any stories you all want to share? We ain't seen nothin yet. :(

It's getting alot worse where I am at. Over the last few months.

Had a drunk driver run over two guys at a gas station when they were filling up their bikes. Drug one of them about 1/4 mile before the police stopped him. When questioned he laughed about what he did.
Had a double murder the other day, not sure if they caught the suspect or not.
Had a guy shoot and kill his girlfriend in Victoria's secret not to long ago. How in the hell do you shoot your girlfriend in Victoria's Secret?!?!?! I mean shes not going there to cut you off!
Had a club shooting last weekend.
This is a mid-sized city in southern Louisiana. Ever since the New Orleans trash rambled into town crime over here is unbelieveable.

People wonder why I'm a DOOMER !!

Not sure about crime here because for some reason I know the scanner freq for the other side of the area but not this side. I just haven't been following it.... could be reading the police blotter in the paper or something but I just haven't.

It's an interesting subject though, maybe if I get out there into the coffee shops and places drawing people I'll get to read the paper regularly and check up on this.

Nothing seems to happen right around here though.

Crime is relatively low and crime rates have been falling for years.

NYPD keeps up the pace as murders fall to historic low

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')ew York, once dubbed the murder capital of America, recorded fewer than 500 murders in a single year for the first time since reliable record-keeping began in 1963. In the final hours of the year, the 2007 tally stood at 492, compared with the record high of 2,245 at the height of the crack epidemic in 1990.

And New York City is not alone:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')hicago reported 435 killings up to Christmas Day - its lowest toll since 1965, when there were 395

I'd say we are safer today than we've been since the 1950s.

Pretty steady and pretty low crime here. I attribute that mainly to it being hard to get away with it. The court system and police dept is pretty good and large for the area and the area itself is mostly well designed with eyes on the street etc. They may have caught him, but the latest crime wave was some dude grabbing (assaulting) girls butts around the metros.

The dead end street I live on has not had a burglary or a major crime since it was cut in back in '96.

Not even one car break in.

Lots of Gang violence on the rise here and we do not have enough Cops. The tax revenue is just not there to pay for everything we need.

Chicago and especially New York have tons and tons of Cops they are the exception not the rule. LA is closer to how things are getting.

LA is safer today than it was back when little families of five inhabited the city along with their black and white televisions and station wagons.

The current bump in crime (if there even is one) is minor compared to the long term trend of a dramatic reduction in serious crime in this country.

In the neighboring city Oakland CA, crime is out of control. The main problem is with West and East Oakland. One problem is the Oakland PD lacks resources to respond to matters. It usually takes them forever to respond, from what I heard the response time is 45 minutes in some areas.

In Berkeley the response time is about two to three minutes to an call to 911. Berkeley has a fantastic police department, and the added benefit of the University police. But yes, Oakland is a huge city and it's swamped.

Something y'all may not have thought about....

And I say this as a political undecided who's rooting for Al Gore to give the Democrats a run for their money and for Ron Paul to give the Republicans a run for theirs.

This afternoon on the radio news I heard a report from Richmond CA, where the murder rate appears to be soaring, and where gangs are an enormous problem. The city council had a meeting, and one of the people present stepped up to the mic and said "It may be politically incorrect to say so, but the problem is thug culture."

Thug culture. Gangsta culture, along with gangsta music, gangsta fashion, and gangsta-speak.

Fast-forward to Iowa, and Obama's speech. Whatever you might think about his platform, the man is a damn good speaker and he uses the language with precision.

So. Something occurred to me.

If we put Obama in the White House, he is going to set an example for black kids to live up to, and he is not going to take any shit from black teenagers who are hell-bent on gangsta-ism. Think of Nixon the anti-communist cold warrior being able to open relations with China.

Suddenly it's not going to be cool to be a gangsta. You are going to see the music change, the style of dress change, and the language change. Kids who used to talk like they've been living in a prison cell all their lives are going to start talking like they are planning to go to the university.

Black parents are going to turn into strict disciplinarians with their kids "because we have an example to live up to," and the kids are going to get serious in school. And white urban kids and kids of other ethnicities will see it coming and get serious too, a) because serious in school is the new "cool," and b) so they don't get left in the dust.

The dropout rate will drop, crime will drop along with it, and you will see more kids not only finishing high school but finishing college as well.

In other words, Obama in the White House is the fastest route to a drop in the crime rate.

Count on it.

"Thugism" or self-destructive nihilism didn't become prevalent or "cool" by accident, people reflect their environment and cultural decadence will not disappear without addressing the roots of disease, which one would hope are pretty obvious with all the topics discussed on this site. The idea that our president is relevant, publicly elected, and influential to the common man is another symptom of life structured around a reality-negating mythology, seemingly ironic for an engineer to be so metaphysical. Oddly enough you've acknowledged overshoot as unsustainable yet one would barely know reading most of your posts.

Try telling that to people who've lived in Brooklyn or Queens for the past eight years, you're asking to get laughed at. Murder numbers aside and questionable themselves, crime has been increasing, whats changed is how crime stats are documented to make the administration look good. All Giuliani and Bloomberg succeeded at was hiding the crime. I suspect Chicago no different.

So now I have to believe an alternative set of facts about the crime rate too?

My aunt is an assistant district attorney for the city of New York. I'm inclined to believe her over some guy making speculative predictions on the internet. Crime is down throughout NYC.

As for Queens:

2006 Queens County Crime Rates Remain At Historic Low

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')rown [District Attorney for Queens County] continued, "Queens County has witnessed a tremendous overall drop in serious crime for more than a decade. The reduction in the level of violence in the county has been so significant--a drop of 74 percent since 1993--that some have questioned whether it could be maintained. The 2006 figures showing that the levels have remained near or below their historic lows--offer clear and compelling evidence that our law enforcement initiatives continue to have a profound impact in making Queens County one of the safest counties in the nation."

I don't know about NYC, but about three miles from here we have the easternmost terminal of the community blood gauntlet called MAX, where within a few blocks of the train station we have a steady stream of major crime. And thugism is a permanent fixture.
