The economic meltdown Schadenfreude thread

Unread postby Jack » Fri 17 Aug 2007, 18:03:57

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 's')chadenfreude \SHOD-n-froy-duh\, noun:
A malicious satisfaction obtained from the misfortunes of others.

Link

Lately, we're hearing a lot about the stock market meltdown - but at least part of the underlying problem seems to be various parts of the mortgage market (e.g., subPrime, 2/28, Alt-A, ARM, CDOs, and so forth).

If this isn't resolved, the next thing we're likely to see are large numbers of first-time home buyers tossed out of the houses they thought they would own. We will see their images of their possessions stacked on the curb as the houses are seized. Children will cling to parents. Tears will drip slowly down cheeks. Sullen rage will glow in eyes.

Perhaps a rain storm will come along, soaking the mound of things as the newly dispossessed pick though the things, salvaging what they can. And then they will depart...to live with some relative somewhere, or within a crowded, stinking slum, or perhaps to reside in their SUV.

New lending standards will preclude them ever purchasing another house. Their dream of home ownership will die. And with that dream, hope itself will sicken and likewise decease.

But the thing is - you and I, good reader, along with other intelligent people won't have this problem. We avoided the debt problem. We get to watch, perhaps enjoy a bit of refreshment, and smirk at the images.

And...to tell you the truth...I'm loving it. It's fun. Classic schadenfreude.

So, how about you? Are you enjoying it too? You can even stay completely anonymous, since this is a poll!

There are risks inherent in investing in housing, just as there are risks in other kinds of investments.

When there is blood in the (Main) streets, I may pick up some more property.

I have verified where I stand with my local bank and have started watching the Sheriff's auction circulars.

For a brief moment, as I waited for page to load, I feared there would be no "sociopath" option. Thankfully my fear was unfounded.

It's the automatic, knee-jerk, no-brainer, conditioned-response choice, of course.

I would never, ever inflict so cruel a disappointment on the peakoil.com community. It would be, quite simply, wrong.

You have my solemn promise that the sociopath option will always be available in any poll I start.

(Hmm. A promise by a professed sociopath. Riiight.)

In this case it's a promise you can't help but fulfill.

"molier than thou"--- you made me spit a chunk of chicken. Fargin' a I'm having some of that shaddenfreud stuff.I tried to warn people about the economy and P.O. and they looked at me like I was nuts or they'd politely roll their eyes at their friend when they thought I wasn't looking.I like the idea of them being like the chili eatin' , sniveling rats. bastard covered bastards with insides full of bastard sauce. Then again me and the internal combustion engine have been like peas in a pod for 25 years, I'm gonna miss it when it's gone.
Perhaps the population would be less swayed to socialism if we had fewer examples of socialism from our "Free Market Capitalists". -----fiddler dave

In the global casino the odds always favor the house. If the house does find themselves in a corner, they change the rules of the game or just make more chips.

This puts a damper on my schadenfreude. I can't take any enjoyment in foreclosures because these people were born to lose. They put the money in the slot pulled the handle and nothing came back.

There is a bright side though. That is when the house loses. When economists and bankers panic. When hedge funds evaporate. When banks start to fail. This is the source of my optimism.

To see economists and their pretentious theories of endless growth and profits come crashing down in a calamitous inferno of flames and black smoke. That for me is true schadenfreude.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'B')ut then I pinch myself and remember that you are also one sick fuck and this whole thing is just a barrel full of monkeys. and stuff.

Why, thank you. A friend recently sent me a video - the links are:

Part I

Part II

They're of a lion eating a rather foolish man...in front of his wife...and two young children...

(Seriously, some may be disturbed by the images. If you click, you've been warned. No, I wasn't disturbed by them.)

Anyway, I suggested a new business - feed the dear departed to the lions. The funeral costs less, the lions get fed, and everyone goes away happy.

I trust that confirms my sick f--khood? 8)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'S')o how about those hurricanes and meltdowns? feeling good, huh?

Well, yes, actually. Furthermore, I'm heartened by the one model that shows Dean plowing dead center into New Orleans. Now that would take me directly from mere popcorn to Nachos!

We're talking...party time!

I'd like to add that Jack is As warm, cute and cuddly as a East Texas Cottonmouth

Jack may be a sociopath, but by god he is "our" sociopath.
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'W')hat was that square object the lion carried off at 14 sec. in part II? It wasn't a packaged steak was it?

The version I got was somewhat higher resolution, but the nature of the object is ambiguous. I'd guess it was just a nice hunk of flesh.

I wonder if it tasted more like chicken, or pork?
