$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')eople may download their consciousnesses into computers or other bodies even on the other side of the solar system, or participate in a giant "hive mind", a network of intelligences connected through ultra-fast communications networks.

Sci-fi had that very new idea quite a long time back : Buck Rogers had that, at least in the novel series. Also, the Warstrider series by William Keith. As for hive minds, the Invid in Robotech, and the Buggers in the Ender novels (Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow) by Orson Scott Card.

For really big-scale hive minds, you'll have talk about Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 Civilizations : Warstrider talks about all 3. The Technocracy crowd likes such things.

"We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile."

Oh shit! Where is species 742 when you need them? Too bad there isn't a "Class X" planet around so the borg could be killed when they breathe the atmosphere of the planet that is sulpheric acid; that, or the planet clones them and makes the clones dependant on the new atmosphere and the replica ship disintigrates while the original Borg Cube attempts to rescue them from thier death.

That is about the only thing I miss since eliminating TV from my life, Startrek: Voyager.

Even with that Borg image in peoples head, I wonder how many would volunteer for something like that. While a collective intelligence could have the potential of things like maybe cutting crime and boosting the general intelligence of society I think most people would fight anything that would take away from free will and individuality. Of course, given the right spin and propoganda, anything can be sold to the sheeple.

The Borg were a "lousy" hive mind. They were slow to react to danger to individual members, and in the end we found out that they had a "Borg Queen" in charge. That's a single point of failure!
