Convince Yourself

Unread postby kochevnik » Mon 25 Jun 2007, 22:43:11

In Thuja's thread I brought up the point that a lot of us (all of us likely) post here in an effort to subconsciously convince OURSELVES that we will be ok come crash time. I am no different in this regard than anyone else. Pops replied with a great post (copied below) in which he consciously convinced himself that he would be ok.

I suggest that it might be a good thing psychologically if people were to honestly confront their demon and post why they think they will be the lottery winnners in all this.

Quit pretending all this verbiage is for someone other than those little SuperEgo/Id guys in your head.

Good for the soul and all that. :)

I have guns, I have gunpowder and I have food.

Be damned if I die, cause if I do, I feel sorry for those who are more fortunate.

Well, what are we supposed to do, give up all hope?

Optimism is better for your health and immune system. Not to say one shouldn't be realistic but there's such a thing as preparing for the worst but shooting for the best.

I actually read in order to remind myself how unprepared I am. When I start to get complacent or start to question my convictions I spend a little time on a couple of these threads and then I go back to work. I work some doubles, I find that extra chain saw , I convince myself that it is not enough to just be read to store some wheat but actually need to get down to the feed store and buy some and store it and on and on....

I am quite hard and I like soup and other simple food.
My immune system is pretty good.
Quite good at growing veg using organic or synthetic methods.
Can fix stuff
Got no debt
May be able to second guess what the authorities will do next, and thus I might look like some kind of visionary as I act like it's all the fault of unpatriotic terrorist scum.

Well, yes. It won't be the end whilst there are still survivors, pretty much by definition..

I read the posts, respond to some, ignore others, I read, I think, I learn.

I find the entire website is less about current events and planning for the future and more about Hope. In a crisis situation full of danger, confusion, fear and the unknown, humans have often resorted to Hope as the tool which keeps them going against all odds.

I for one have nothing to live for and an iron will to survive. As things go south each of us will face his own worst nightmare. Loss of job, money, home, loved ones being swept up in the tide of war, victimization through crime, events or legislation, changing our living situation from one of comfort and plenty to one of despair. Hope offers strength, perseverance, and ability to move forward. Without hope, all is lost. All our material goods can be swept away in a day, our lives can be turned upside down overnight. We can wake up tomorrow in a different world. It is Hope that will see us through.

I think many of us are involved in this website because we have Hope. What amount of guns and soup can replace hope? Hope is a quality that can be shared. It costs nothing, requires no fuel, and comes in limitless supply. Hope can spring from nothing and grow to cover the world. It is the single most important preparation that will carry you the furthest, fastest, longest.

Hope is vague, but I see it everywhere. It is amorphous and esoteric, but in these threads it is bountiful. It is a readily emulated, rapidly propagated, highly versatile tool, and I think a great many people on this site possess it. Out worst enemy in the future will be despair. As great and deep despair can be, it takes only a flicker of hope to come out of it.
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--for ever."

I agree that optimism/hope can endure your lifespan, but what's the reason for doing so? "Hope" is more of a "how" than a "why".
