Kids need space to learn and to an extent they need to learn from their mistakes, but there is a flip side.

When my kids were younger, they played with a couple of other children whose parents were also friends of mine. We all did a lot of things together, lots of outings to parks, parties, camping, you name it. I was always the most cautious of the four parents involved when it came to supervising the kids. Over the years, there were some instances when I was around (and another parent would not have been because they all decided the kids did not need supervision) and I shudder to think what would have happened had I not been there.

Once, I stopped a 3-year-old as he was just about to stick a long piece of metal into an electrical outlet. Another time, on the way over to our friends place, I drove up behind two of their children riding a small tricycle in the middle a busy road on a curve and quickly got them onto the sidewalk. Another day, on a family outing to a lake, the other parents thought the kids should be fine in the water without them and I decided to swim with them. While there, one of the kids went out a bit too far for his swimming level and I went out to get him (there was no lifeguard on duty). There was another incident on a toboggan hill, and a few more.

You have to use common sense. It is always alright, I suppose, if no huge harm is done and the kid gets another chance.

Are any of you surprised that men are being raised to be uninspired and unadventurous? We can't have men being filled with the bellicose tales of Caesar, or the noble spirits of the Founding Fathers. That might gave them a backbone to resist when some wrong is done on them.

Since this seems to be a thread to tell your best childhood stories, I'll give you mine.

My dad had a reloading machine for shotgun shells, and didn't know I knew where he kept the rest of his ammo. I stole several .22 and .30-06 shells and took them out in the woods, where me and my friends set them off with rocks. I think that's when my dad realized he needed to keep a closer eye on me. Unfortunately he soon left after that, so I was brought up with a tragic lack of knowledge about cars. Which trust me, when you have a car breakdown on ya, is a huge regret.

The rest of the manly stuff I had to work out on my own. Good thing I had alot of good books on morals to guide me.
