A very tragic picture, indeed. The article by Chris Hedges is also moving; he has chosen his words carefully. From all I have read, this occupation has shown what humans can be reduced to rather than what they could be elevated to.
I know it is too simple to just wish that no one would join the army - no army, no war! - after all, some country or other would use that opportunity to invade the US and we could never have that (sarcasm off). But really, imagine no need for armies. I am not much of a Bible thumper, but I believe prophecy says that the second coming of Jesus will occur when there is peace throughout the world - someone please correct me if I am mistaken. Perhaps we will just fight for resources until nothing is left and we have no more armies - then peace.
