Harry Houdini--The World's Greatest Escape Artist

Unread postby Jogger » Tue 12 Jun 2007, 01:15:06

Everyone,

Harry Houdini, a magician from the early 20th century, is considered the greatest escape artist the world has ever known. How many people in the world today can accomplish his great feats?

He escaped from jails, handcuffs, chains, ropes, straightjackets while hanging from a rope in plain sight of street audiences, locked, water-filled milk cans, and his famous Chinese Water Torture Cell.

Harry said he wanted to escape death. Yet, 81 years after his death, he has not returned.

Will Harry Houdini pull off the greatest magic trick the world has ever known, escaping from death and arriving back on Earth in the future in a post peak oil world to once again entertain audiences with his dazzling escape acts?

C'mon Harry! You can do it! Make the folks here at Peakoil.com proud! LOL

Houdini was a great guy. His real name was something like Benjamin Lipshitz or something, he named himself after his early hero, a fellow named Houdin, who was a magician - Houdini would mean essentially "son of houdin". Houdini studies and worked his ass off. He was also a great exposer of cons and scams that so called spiritualists were using to fleece people of their money. A great champion of rationalism.

He was a sort of soul-brother to Richard Feynman, a very hard working and scientifically rigorous guy.

His too-early death was a great loss.

I heard he hung around with Conan-Doyle (Sherlock Holmes author) as well. He was a wannabe spiritualist.
Kind regards, Katkinkate

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('katkinkate', 'I') heard he hung around with Conan-Doyle (Sherlock Holmes author) as well. He was a wannabe spiritualist.
He initially looked into spiritualism, wanting to make contact with his dead mother. When that didn't happen, he turned into a rabid spiritualism debunker - sort of like the (so called) Amazing Randi likes to do today. Conan-Doyle thus came to hate Houdini.

There is even speculation that Conan-Doyle was behind Houdini's alleged accidental death. 8O
