I've love to live rent-free.....

The closest I can think of is to drop out of society as much as possible, live in a rented room that doesn't cost too much, and do the odd jobs, sketching people, etc.

Living in a van can work, but there's a lot of hassle involved in not being found out, etc. Plus a lot of street crime issues.
