FDA proposes Irradiated Food Labels be changed to Pasturized

Unread postby mmasters » Sun 15 Apr 2007, 21:47:29

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ASHINGTON (AP) - The government proposed Tuesday relaxing its rules on labeling of irradiated foods and suggested it may allow some products zapped with radiation to be called "pasteurized."

The Food and Drug Administration said the proposed rule would require companies to label irradiated food only when the radiation treatment causes a material change to the product. Examples includes changes to the taste, texture, smell or shelf life of a food.

The FDA also proposed letting companies use the term "pasteurized" to describe irradiated foods. To do so, they would have to show the FDA that the radiation kills germs as well as the pasteurization process does. Pasteurization typically involves heating a product to a high temperature and then cooling it rapidly.

In addition, the proposal would let companies petition the agency to use additional alternate terms other than "irradiated."

Those stinking weasels.

First they want to ban vitamins, then they want to ban dairies being able to say "we don't use rBST on our cows," and now they're touting a euphemism for nuking the food.

Personally I have no fear of food that's been nuked, I think that issue may have been overblown.

However, people deserve to be accurately informed and to make their own choices.

I say it's time to dismantle FDA altogether, and rebuild it from scratch, with a minimalist mission concerned with purity & potency & overt contamination, and that's all.

This is the most sensible policy I've heard in ages, but there's not much money to be made by big business or big government in it, so obviously they won't let it happen...

I'd do the same to the USDA, EPA, and other related organizations as well.
