I read a couple of articles about this last night. If I understood them correctly, the Prince's brother is very ill and, like a good brother, he resigned to be with the immediate family. I don't blame him one bit.

The idea that he is quitting because of an ailing Brother is just a quaint cover story.

He has been in politics all his life you don't quit cause your brother gets sick.

May God help us all if, like the link suggest Saudi Arabia is tilting more to the right. I would bet the house of Suad was pissed by the Baker reports suggestion that we throw Iraq over to the Iranians.

I thought something like this might happen. As soon as King Fahd died, I figured there would be a battle for succession between the pro and anti-US members of the royal family. Check out my post from May 19.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Dreamtwister', 'K')ing Abdullah is probably the last of the "old guard" of pro-US royals. When he dies (he's 82), Prince Sultan is next in line for the throne, and he is...somewhat less sympathetic to US interests.

Wikipedia on Prince Sultan

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')rince Sultan denied the United States use of Saudi bases to stage military strikes on Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks, stating that his government "will not accept in [Saudi Arabia] even a single soldier who will attack Muslims or Arabs."

On 15th August 2002, he was one of three Saudi princes sued for allegedly helping to finance the terrorist attacks of 11th September 2001, the other two being Prince Turki bin Faisal and Prince Mohammed bin Faisal.

If King Abdullah has in fact been overthrown or assasinated, things are going to get very ugly, very fast.

Of interesting historical note: It seems he is the man who actually recruited Osama bin Laden in the 80's to go to Afghanistan. Al-Faisal is also on record likening the war in Iraq to a colonial war of territorial expansion.

We're only beginning to see just how big a can of worms the Neocon hyenas opened when they invaded Iraq. There's no telling what price we'll pay for this idiotic adventure.

The rumors I've heard: Saudi populace is threatening the Royal Family if they let the US leave Iraq and allow a genocide of the Sunnis. House of Saud threatens US it will send troops to Iraq if the US leaves and widespread war will break out in the region, including Iran, when House of Saud increases oil production and undercuts Iran's prices. (Unmentioned part is when Iran cuts of Straits of Hormuz and oil supply) Chaos ensues. US goes into crapper.

But I don't actually know anything about this...others can fill in the details/corrections.

Here's the only detail that really matters: We are royally, thoroughly, absolutely screwed, thanks to BushCo.

In which fairy world were "we" (we being society as it exists now) not screwed? Especially since you have heard about peak oil? This isn't news, we might not know the exact date or tipping point, but every point from now until the collapse is just us walking further up the cliff, a longer fall. No one can stop that, whether Bush or Gore, and the war would have been what the military chiefs wanted the most (they have THEIR ways to solve resource problems), would have happened regardless of who was in.
