where do you see the price of oil in dec 2006?

Well, the mid term elections are over. The price for a barrel of oil is still on $58 - $59. Where do you see it in December?

Well, to be honest, I made a prediction year ago (december 2005) at some other forum, that it will be 80 USD. give or take 2 USD. I do not consider this to be a good prediction anymore, but just mentioned that because it is one year long shot.

Actually I want to correct it down to the range of 60-70 - so my new prediction is 60-70. Nevertheless I would really like to see how my one year prediction plays out.

Where do you see it?

I predict no greater than $70 a barrel.

I predict $82! No, I predict $87! Hell, I predict $152, why not.

Where are the doomers when you need them. I think we're all in the post-election doldrums. Everybody's mildly happy that the dems won, but we're all a little disappointed that the bottom hasn't dropped out as dramatically as foretold.

Don't worry, fellow doomers, the best is yet to come. Paciencia, as our brothers down south would say.

Actually a low oil price right now is great for true doomers  It just promotes over consumption and a business as usual approach.

End of this year hmmm... I'd hazard a guess of between 55-70.

Want to know a true doomer scenario. LONG plateau with business as usual then MASSIVE sharp declines  Hell yeah bring that one on for doom LOL :D

Essentially the market pricing mechanisim would lead people to think hey we got over oil at $78 lets buy hummers again and then *POOF* ten years later we're off the side of the energy cliff.

For over a month, the price for Brent seem to be stuck at the $ 57/58 range (at least on a 20 day moving average). However, there seems to be a lot of volutity around this range (the extra volutity seemed to start in late July).

The last month or so has made it clear that I do not know how to factor into my predictions likely results of demand destruction (even small amounts). However, with us moving towards winter, I would expect the price to pick up a bit so lets say in the low $60s.

Disclaimer: This new estimate is substantially below an earlier one I made so it is not worth the paper it is printed on.

Don't forget, the US fed has deferred refilling the SPR depleted in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. So, demand is still artificially low. IMHO, SPR refilling will push oil prices back in to the $70's. Until then, enjoy the $2 and change gas at the pump.

I will. My road trip vacation starts tomorrow.

Does anyone here think that gas prices will rise more slowly during the next run on crude? With the threat of a horrible hurricane season behind us, venezuela and iran keeping quiet, and the "promise" of a democrat-controlled congress, I think gasoline will not spike to $3 a gallon the next time crude flirts with $80 a barrel. I don't think there's enough global instability this time.

For December I really have no clue, but I'd say it will trade somewhere between $62 and $80.

I do. The Good-ol-Boys where I live were screaming for corporate heads to roll last year when gasoline suddenly went to $3.19/gal.

Petroleum industry executives know these "freedom-loving rugged individualists" would demand a "windfall profits tax" right quick if they don't give them a little fore-play and lubrication before penetration next time.

Cost per week to drive 25 miles to work at the coal mine:

@ $2.50 gal = $45
@ $4.00 gal = $71

On their salary, $27 extra dollars per week is the difference between beer and no beer. People get very, very unhappy when they have no beer.

This is an interesting observation. Would the US government allow oil prices to rice too much above the present level even if the level of production were to decline? Basic economic principles dictate that as demand increases and supply drops, prices must increase to force demand to drop to equal supply? But could the US government break this simple rule as long as they think they can to prevent high fuel prices from bringing on a depression sooner?

Americans think for the now, for the moment and don't care about tomorrow. That is someone else's worry.
