First came the dinosaurs, then came man, then came ???

Everyone,

What will happen in the long-term future if the doomers on this board are correct in their predictions? What would happen if man disappeared from the Earth?

The Earth won't care and will carry on. The Moon will continue to orbit the Earth but will slowly move farther and farther away. The continents will drift. What creatures will dominate the Earth?

Rodents and cockroaches perhaps? Millions of years from now will there be giant rabbits that run fast and giant cockroaches as well?

We must realize that it is very possible that there will be ferocious creatures living on the Earth in the future, just like in the past.

Apes will inherit the Earth.

I know this since I saw a movie showing it. Several movies actually.

I place my bets on Racoons. They are highly adaptable and will probably have the best shot to survive the coming mass extinction. Most of the apes and other primates are already on the endangered species list and probably won't make it. Racoons have all parts necissary to evolve into inteligent tool making species. They have hands with thumbs and rather large brains and can eat just about anything.

If you are referring to "Planet of the Apes", yes, that was a great film with several sequels. Charleton Heston's character wanted to find something better than man. Unfortunately, I don't think apes will inherit the Earth.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Jogger', 'U')nfortunately, I don't think apes will inherit the Earth.

On the serious side, neither do i. I suppose what takes over us overgrown orangutans depends on:

(a) if we nuke (enough of?) the whole Earth or

(b) just die through a planetwide industrial/technical collapse lasting long enough to take us all out.

I doubt (b) will happen, there's just too much knowledge and resources around to make us extinct. But (a) seems more like an actual possibility day-by-day.

I'd go with the giant cockroaches. I'm not sure about rodents, but cockroaches can live through a nuclear fallout right?

Whatever takes over us, I can just see that last human riding up to the oil fields of Ghawar saying:

"You maniacs! You depleted it up! Damn you, damn you to hell!"

Soothsayer, that is a seriously, seriously, seriously disturbing photo. I think I´m going to go hide in my closet now.
