My Son Is Thinking Of Being A Cop

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Mon 03 Jul 2006, 01:45:55

He's got a summer job working for the Harbor Police. They like him. I've been trying to steer him away from the idea of being a musician, (not from music, I think that's great, I love what he does and his enthusiasm, but there's no money in it for almost everyone who tries and I think he is begining to realize that too at 17). I don't really know who is right about when the troubles will hit or how bad it will really be. Sometimes I think it's going to be doom, sometimes I don't. One thing I do know is the bullshit arguments here haven't convinced me one way or the other. Just a lot of intellectual chest thumping for the most part. I figured over a year ago that I'd stick around and just have some fun while waiting to see the truth. My point is that we should encourage our kids to build their lives in spite of peak oil. We don't know what's going to happen. It may be many years before TSHTF. Police Officer is a good profession and honorable.

I don't know about california, but cops in oregon are just parasites. All they do now is harass motorists and collect traffic fines. They can't be bothered with anything else. They make their living by stealing from the rest of society with a badge and gun (taxes and fines) If I were to do the same thing (which i wouldn't) I'd get convicted of numerous felonies. Cops get to do it every day with the blessing of the government. After all they are the ultimately the last step in tax collection if the government can not collect.

They should all be ashamed of themselves....it is not honorable at all.

It is my hope that peak oil or even the financial bankruptcy of this country alone without peak oil will mark the end of wide spread professional police. Policing should be volunteer work by members of the community. Dare I choose the word militia?

I thought San Diego is already on the verge of bankruptcy. I Guarantee if your son gets hired he will either go to traffic duty stealing from motorists with a badge and a gun or vice, stealing from hard working hookers with a badge and a gun. There is not enough resources for real productive police work any more.

Perhaps your son can join the Feds and help to usher in the glorious police state. better to be in the police than a civilian in the police state that is currently emerging. Maybe as family he'll even be able to protect your neck from getting jackbooted when tshtf.

You're very correct about there not being any money in music. I am only 18 myself, and I have opted for a different route, but one that will allow me to remain close to what I love to do; audio engineering. If your son enjoys law enforcement, encourage him to follow that path, but at the same time let him know that it is completely possible for him to maintain a musicle career while holding another job. Hell, I'd wager that 99% of the bands I listen to are required to have seperate jobs from their musical ones to make a living. In fact, it is more common than not for it to be this way.

I suppose my point is, he can do both if he really wants :D

Pen - After reading all this and you are still on the fence?
Is there something about PO or even GW that does not compute?

Powerdown/strive for self sufficiency and SHTF and you may be ok.
Do not powerdown and SHTF and you probably won't be ok.
With GW it looks like we shall all suffer regardless yet that is probably something else that you are undecided about........

Oh we are gonna need alot of cops to police the streets after curfew to prevent killing, looting of food and fuel.

Remember 1992' ? just a small example of what happens when TSHTF.

There was a time when people practiced the arts for no reward other then the art itself.

BOB DYLAN'S 115TH DREAM

I was riding on the Mayflower
When I thought I spied some land
I yelled for Captain Arab
I have yuh understand
Who came running to the deck
Said, "Boys, forget the whale
Look on over yonder
Cut the engines
Change the sail
Haul on the bowline"
We sang that melody
Like all tough sailors do
When they are far away at sea

"I think I'll call it America"
I said as we hit land
I took a deep breath
I fell down, I could not stand
Captain Arab he started
Writing up some deeds
He said, "Let's set up a fort
And start buying the place with beads"
Just then this cop comes down the street
Crazy as a loon
He throw us all in jail
For carryin' harpoons

Ah me I busted out
Don't even ask me how
I went to get some help
I walked by a Guernsey cow
Who directed me down
To the Bowery slums
Where people carried signs around
Saying, "Ban the bums"
I jumped right into line
Sayin', "I hope that I'm not late"
When I realized I hadn't eaten
For five days straight

I went into a restaurant
Lookin' for the cook
I told them I was the editor
Of a famous etiquette book
The waitress he was handsome
He wore a powder blue cape
I ordered some suzette, I said
"Could you please make that crepe"
Just then the whole kitchen exploded
From boilin' fat
Food was flying everywhere
And I left without my hat

Now, I didn't mean to be nosy
But I went into a bank
To get some bail for Arab
And all the boys back in the tank
They asked me for some collateral
And I pulled down my pants
They threw me in the alley
When up comes this girl from France
Who invited me to her house
I went, but she had a friend
Who knocked me out
And robbed my boots
And I was on the street again

Well, I rapped upon a house
With the U.S. flag upon display
I said, "Could you help me out
I got some friends down the way"
The man says, "Get out of here
I'll tear you limb from limb"
I said, "You know they refused Jesus, too"
He said, "You're not Him
Get out of here before I break your bones
I ain't your pop"
I decided to have him arrested
And I went looking for a cop

I ran right outside
And I hopped inside a cab
I went out the other door
This Englishman said, "Fab"
As he saw me leap a hot dog stand
And a chariot that stood
Parked across from a building
Advertising brotherhood
I ran right through the front door
Like a hobo sailor does
But it was just a funeral parlor
And the man asked me who I was

I repeated that my friends
Were all in jail, with a sigh
He gave me his card
He said, "Call me if they die"
I shook his hand and said goodbye
Ran out to the street
When a bowling ball came down the road
And knocked me off my feet
A pay phone was ringing
It just about blew my mind
When I picked it up and said hello
This foot came through the line

Well, by this time I was fed up
At tryin' to make a stab
At bringin' back any help
For my friends and Captain Arab
I decided to flip a coin
Like either heads or tails
Would let me know if I should go
Back to ship or back to jail
So I hocked my sailor suit
And I got a coin to flip
It came up tails
It rhymed with sails
So I made it back to the ship

Well, I got back and took
The parkin' ticket off the mast
I was ripping it to shreds
When this coastguard boat went past
They asked me my name
And I said, "Captain Kidd"
They believed me but
They wanted to know
What exactly that I did
I said for the Pope of Eruke
I was employed
They let me go right away
They were very paranoid

Well, the last I heard of Arab
He was stuck on a whale
That was married to the deputy
Sheriff of the jail
But the funniest thing was
When I was leavin' the bay
I saw three ships a-sailin'
They were all heading my way
I asked the captain what his name was
And how come he didn't drive a truck
He said his name was Columbus
I just said, "Good luck."

Yes and no, I don't know. What can you do, become some kind of doomer freak? I think I made my point. And what can you do about these psychotic geeks like Omar? Arrest them! Bread and Water! Throw away the writ of Habeas Corpus! Throw away the Magna Carta! Conduct a Mexican Dirty War! (just kidding 8) )

PMS, this thread looks to be going nowhere and I’m not sure whether the title is the topic or the bit about chest thumping but I thought I’d toss in my .02 anyway.

My son wanted to be a cop – CHP in particular. He said he wanted to have an honorable profession and he might save a baby by getting drunks off the road.

I told him I thought his job would be scooping dead babies off the road - not quite the same

The worst thing about being a good guy in that job, is that the majority of people you deal with aren’t - not suprising the emotional problems cops have.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

yes I knew a cop who found it difficult to see the good in anybody.

Then again I sometimes have that difficulty too. At least there's job security in the police.

Good for him PMS. The opportunity to learn skills needed to become a lawman in the future could prove handy. Might want to reseach the Patriot Act I and II to see what will be expected of him. I think Harbor Police or a rural Sherriff's dept would be safer than precinct in a rough area.

Rural Sherrif sounds nice, but don't they have a crystal meth problem out in the hinterlands? He's got a cousin who sold 38 thousand dollars worth of Buck Knives last week. I used to tell him all the time, if you want money, go into sales. Like every parent, I think about how he can make a life for himself. I cannot just assume that the world will come crashing down even if it is. That's the subject of this thread, Pops. (and cops)

Sales is a tough business, Street Selling or cold calling is tougher than one who maintains established accts. 10 years ago I sold copiers, for every 400 personal sales cold calls I made I could expect 12 demos then close 8. Then half of them could not qualify for financing so that would make for 4 sales.

Again for every sale I made: I got run off or escorted out of buildings 20 times, 50 times I was told they were not interested, 18 times I was thanked, 12 times I got to demo the product, 50% of the time I got outbidded or was dealing with someone who had bad credit and no funds.

The job makes you tough and persuasive. On the flipside when my sales jobs simply required maintaining established accounts, it did involves less rejection but you will put up with more bitching and silly crap than a priest or pastor does.

Yes, thanks. I saw Glengarry Glen Ross and read Death of a Salesman and kind of figured it can be hard. My brother-in-law has made a bundle selling electronic components to manufacturers. Then there's the kid selling buck knives I mentioned.. He's rolling in dough. I think it's matter of being in the right sales field. I sold some paintings of dogs when I was young. I probably could have made a living at it if I had been more focused on it. That's what I'm trying to do for my son: focus his mind on making a living. Cop might be a good way to go with this uncertain future we face.

Not disagreeing with you necessarily, but...

I decided to check out myspace this weekend only to discover that one of my good friends from high school has become something of a minor league rock star. http://www.bryanturnermusic.com/ He played guitar back in high school, but wasn't much into the music scene. More of a football jock. Now he's getting radio play. Go figure.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') figured over a year ago that I'd stick around and just have some fun while waiting to see the truth. My point is that we should encourage our kids to build their lives in spite of peak oil.

Pretty much gotta agree with that. I decided some time back that when dealing with peak oil, it's best to be aware that it's coming, but that a person still has to live his life in this society and base his decisions on what will get him by here and now. If I was ridiculously wealthy I might be able to plan for these eventual realities more effectively, but I'm not. I'm quite convinced that the storm is coming, but the fact is no one knows when or how our society will come to an end. It could be 10, 20, 30, or a hundred years. So why ruin my life and my kids lives scaring the shit out of all of us believing with utmost sincerity that the world will end tommorrow. The world has been getting pretty steadily crappier year after year for quite some time now, to ignore that is to be blind, to obsess over it is to be doomed (one way or another), to acknowledge it and still live your life to the fullest is to be realistic.

If I was your son I'd become a cop, if thats what I wanted to do. But if he goes dirty I hope the world ends on his shift :)

Peace

Oh yeah and I don't believe for a second that you're on the fence. You know what you think is coming, you just aren't a doomer or an optimist. That being you aren't able to tie yourself down with the idea that the world could end ANYTIME (doomer) or with a blind love affair with the way things are (optimist) So I guess that makes you real......... I knew I liked you for a reason :-D

I sure hope so last thing we need is another dirty cop. One of my good buddies decided recently that he's going to try to be a cop. My first reaction was "Jesus god man, why would you want to do that?". My second thought was "You better not be dirty, or I'll kick your ass" and third "You better not bust me for weed, or I'll kick your ass". He insists he won't be dirty except where not busting me for weed is concerned, so it's all good. :)
