Amazing Cynical Interpretation of Echeverria's Arrest

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Sat 01 Jul 2006, 23:24:28

The former president of Mexico, Luis Echeverria, was arrested for the killings in Mexico in 1968. I was talking with a Mexican about it and he gave this astonishing interpretation. Echeverria probably wanted to be arrested and tried to be declared innocent before he dies to clear his name. He's old and may die soon. The man is a very clever bastard, says my friend. The elites have an iron grip on that country and this is just about the only thing Fox has been able to do. So there you have it. Cynical or correct? Another item of Mexican interest, it seems that when the drug lords move into a town in Mexico, they bring prosperity. Lots of cars and doctors and lawyers and money flow into the town. Hmm, you don't suppose the New York Banks are doing something like that?

I don't know if my friend's interpretation is correct. This may have something to do with these upcoming elections tomorrow. But the SF Chronical article cited above mentions "dozens of disappearances", but it was a lot more than that and the Government Of Mexico was brutal in it's tactics against the uprising of those days, the so-called Mexican Dirty War. It was dirty all right. Very bloody with no concern for due process or legality. With the Mexican oil fields in decline and just a few more years till they haven't got enough, we can expect more of this kind of thing I think. Hell, we'll probably see it here is my guess as the feds try to hold on to control in a chaotic situation.

The implications of these above ideas is that Mexico's ruling elite has the country in it's back pocket and these elections don't really matter. Fox hasn't been able to do much. The PRI doesn't really have to win, they still control the country, it looks like. Past PRI presidents like Salinas and his brother were looters of the Mexican people and now live the good life in Europe. Crimes forgotten. That's why I'm inclined to agree with my Mexican friend, Echeverria wanted to be tried and declared innocent before he died. He's 84 years old and in ill health and the Dirty War is a stain on his reputation. Why now? there's your answer.

I talked with a different Mexican who is actually from Mexico City who told me his uncle worked for Echeverria. When I mentioned Echeverria to him his eyes got big and spooked. He said he had an uncle who work for the man. His uncle was absolutely closed-lipped about it. This other Mexican I work with is named Mario, good kid. We all like him. Mario doesn't accept the theory that Echeverria "wanted" to be tried and found innocent. He told me stories of people being murdered by soldiers. He wants the guy tried and found guilty. Something tells me that Echeverria is a big deal down there. I don't really understand it. Obviously it's a blase issue to people here at peakoil.com. Ho hum.
