Is ignorance bliss or a curse

Unread postby presidentsherrill » Thu 29 Jun 2006, 23:09:47

It seems that nobody really takes an interest in the world around them, with a few exceptions... namely those on this board. Most people I have talked to about Peak Oil have dismissed me as either being paranoid or just dismissing it with the response that the government will fix the problem and that we just need to rip up Alaska and get the "Insert some fictional number here" BBD that is just waiting to be tapped.

Though I must say though with the recent events in the world, I don't think we need to worry about peakoil killing off the populice, I believe that we have more immediate threats to worry about.

*sigh.. why oh why didn't i take the blue pill

Ignorance may be bliss but it's a shallow happiness. Dismissing or ignoring reasoned arguments/reality in favor of maintaining personal illusions is not a healthy way to live, in my opinion it is intellectually and morally bankrupt.

It's better to know the truth, because ultimately, ignorance, is not bliss.

You can be just as blissful and not ignorant with a little more control over your mental functions and a mellow approach to life.

In essence, civilization is ending, I'll make necessary preparations, but if I die, well then I die.

Dying is not a matter of "if", but of "when".

Ignorance is a sin. Our bodies came equiped to fight it, but most of us do not choose to do so.

I would rather take the red pill then the blue one. It can be depressing knowing civilization is coming to an end in my life time. But this knowledge allows me to set my priorities straight. I no longer seek to start a family or grow my numbers in this finite world. Money and career no longer mean as much. I am now living every day like it was my last. If I was ignorant then I would have wasted these last few years on trying to further my material life. Now I am simplifying and slowing down.

Peak Oil for the moment is still for the most part a intangent. There is no way the average american can smell, see, touch, taste, or hear production being outpaced by supply. Well at least not yet. You and I can see it because we are more sensitive to the subtle changes.

Intangents have always been difficult to sell or persuade. Things like Life Insurance. When you buy life insurance, you cannot feel it taste it or see it, you just have a promise and a piece of paper. On the flip side, a tangent form of life insurance is a life preserver, it's something you can see and feel and most people put one on when they go out on a boat in deep water.

That being said, Peak oil is a intangent that is just to big for people to wrap their heads around and they are blessed/cursed with ignorance. Like secret goverment agencies communicating with aliens via secret tunnel bases.

Do I think they exist? Maybe. Does it affect how much I spend at the grocery store ? No.
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
