Too bad this thread is already dated. How did it go, Kod? I would have told her that oil companies get these huge profits whenever people who buy oil start bidding the price up for some reason or other. But emphasize that though they do get these big profits in times like these, they don't get to set the price of whatever oil they have. The Market does that. This, if presented in a convincing, credible tone

should get an intelligent person to start thinking why the Market could be bidding so much for oil, and then coming to the obvious conclusion: there isn't enough oil. They can find out the rest for themselves, though if the conversation were going well, I would have suggested to her to google "peak oil".
