The Price of Chicken

Unread postby duke3522 » Thu 16 Feb 2006, 11:38:59

Hi Folks

Right now in our area we are seeing some of the lowest chicken prices in years. Last week one store had boneless-skinless chicken breast for $1.39 a pound, and today another store has bone-in chicken breast for $0.88 a pound.

I am just wondering why in a time of high fuel costs, especially natural gas, is the price of chicken bottoming out.

My own thinking is that since industrial chicken production is very dependent on natural gas that some of the growers may be cutting back on flock size. This, of course, will mean much higher chicken prices in the future.

Just another sign of how high energy costs are going to effect all our lives.

Man Frank you're making me hungry. I love those bone in ones on the grill too. I have a big Chargriller smoker/griller and I just may have to bring that baby out a little early this year. The good thing about the Chargrillers is that I can use regular charcoal, or, when I am broke, I can use wood I have gathered.

Some potatos and green beans and home made cole slaw to go along. Just too good.

But I still don't understand why chicken is so cheap. Makes me wonder if eggs will be going up as well.

Yikes! I need to call my broker and have him get my portfolio out of the "The things that taste like Chicken" futures market(Snakemeat, frogmeat, alligator meat).

Thanks for the tip.

OMG! I wish chicken in my area were that cheap. Chicken here is $3-something a pound. Man. I could eat really well on chicken that cheap.

Fear psychosis hits Italy, poultry consumption plummets

Bird flu outbreak slows poultry sales in EU

High US Hog Slaughter and Low Chicken Prices Pressure Live Hog Prices

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')arceniuk notes, because of the avian flu, exports of US poultry are down forcing both beef and pork to compete with chicken.

Perdue discusses bird-flu threat

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')erdue and other major producers have various controls in place, and oversight by the U.S. Department of Agriculture helps provide consumers with a greater degree of confidence than those overseas, where chicken prices have plunged by two-thirds or more in recent months, Perdue said.

"It's backing up in freezers," Perdue said of U.S. chicken-meat exports to foreign countries.

That has hammered U.S. producers such as Tyson Foods Inc., the nation's largest chicken, beef and pork company, which reported on Monday that its first-quarter profit plunged 19 percent.

You ain't fooling. My dad is in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. They have the compound locked down. No trips to town. He said the bird flu outbreak was just isolated to the north near the Sahara.

I don't have too much to add to this thread but I thought this was kinda interesting...
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ithin a few days of the order being passed, mass produced chicken legs were dumped on the Iraqi economy by US companies, forcing the market price of chicken down to 71p a kilogram, below the cheapest price that Iraqi producers could sustain.
Those chicken legs were surplus to the US market because the average American prefers breast meat. Before the invasion, those chicken legs would have most likely been sold as pet food.

So how much kilograms of chicken meat does a gator eat before it's ripe for slaughter, and how much gator meat do you get ? The meat EROI so to speak..

Thanks for the info. This helps explain why the 10 pound bags of chicken leg quarters I buy to make dog food have gone from $3.50 a bag to $4.50 a bag over the past 3 months.

A new low price report. Chichen leg quarters $2.50 a 10 pound bag. $0.25 a pound for chicken. That is cheaper than the canned dog food I buy for mutts 1 & 2. I still have some room in my freezer so I will be stocking up.

It is a well known fact that Americans like their white breasts while many outside of the US are equally fond of dark legs. There seems to be no other explaination other than the popularity of prime time television in the US, particularly sit-coms featuring many chicken breast commercials :)

You must go through an awful lot of chickens if you only eat the breast meat. I can get at least 4 meals out of the meat of one chook, then boil the bones and skin for stock as a flavour base for another four.

Hey All,

I cooked up some of these leg quaters last night. Big, meaty, and very tasty. My kid alone ate 5 drumsticks. I also de-boned a bunch of the cooked thighs and am going to make barbeque tonight and chicken and noodles tomorrow.

Some others I plan to bake and freeze in whole pieces for quick meals. Others I am going to freeze raw with a marinade for thr grill this summer.

I told DS I am glad he liked the leg quarters because we are going to be eating a lot of them over the next few months. Because by Sunday night the freezer will be full.
