Who's paying for PO.com's bandwidth?

Unread postby hoplite » Wed 21 Dec 2005, 00:56:46

Ever thought about it? There are 240+ people browsing this site as I type, that costs money. FOLLOW THE MONEY... and look for "vested interests"

--oh I suppose the two small banner ads pay for it all, right?

So, Monte, Who pays the bandwidth bill here at PO.com?

Unread postby hoplite » Wed 21 Dec 2005, 01:45:34

I mean, heck the two banner ads can't be covering all this bandwidth, can they? Enquiring minds want to know....

Your post wasn't deleted, it was moved to the Open forum just like this one.

Your post had little to do with hydrocarbon depletion as per the PO Discussion forum posting guidelines.

HOw is the site funded?

Banner ads, donations and from the site owner's pocket.

FOLLOW THE MONEY - do you have any clue how much it costs to operate a website like this? TENS or even HUNDREDS of DOLLARS a MONTH. Where do you THINK these VAST SUMS of MONEY are coming FROM????

Well what an ugly little thread.

Please remember that Mod evasion is not permitted here.

If you have concerns I'm happy to address them.

If I remember one of Aarons post (We're being watched, or whos watching or some such) they were running around 60 gig of bandwidth a month. (I'm sure its more now)

My webhost, which I pay for completely out of pocket and make NO revenue off of hasmore bandwidth then that. And it costs mo what a decent meal at Applebees would cost.

Point is, running a website, even a somewhat popular one, isnt all that expensive that people cant do it out of pocket.

Now, some websites obviously a person couldnt handle alone. We're talking multiple servers, optical lines, things of that nature....Usually beyond the reach of Average Joes.

But 250 people browsing a forum is not, by any means, alot.

Of course Hoplite doesn't need to because he knows the Black Helicopterists are paying for it all. Aaron & Dan are just their frontpeople :-D

The board kiosk has a section for donations.

If everyone, particularly the frequent posters, chipped in just a little it would certainly help compensate for the countless hours Aaron, Monte, and the rest of the volunteers put in here.

Thanks folks...

The donate tool is still messed up at the moment.

But because of the very generous members we have been good on costs thus far.

Don't worry we will beg again soon.

And there is a donate post in the kiosk as mentioned.

I'm working on a deal to trade some services for our hosting costs after the new year.

I hope to horse trade the entire bill which is slightly more than a simple site like Spec mentioned.

We currently run 2 dual processor bad boys with 3 gig of RAM memory and 2000 gig bandwidth per month, and a load balance appliance.

And it runs around 5 or 6 hundred per month.

I assure you that this is nothing compared to the ten's of thousands of dollars in engineering time Dan & myself spend here though, not to mention the Mod's Editors etc...

But our sincere thanks to EastBay & everyone who has contributed.

Could not do this without you fine folks.
