Peak Oil Kung Fu technique:

I will show you a new way of fighting, Grasshopper. It is called the way of the mouse hiding with his stash under the empty refrigerator. The secret to mastering this way is being very, very silent about your abilities, your provisions, and your intentions. If anybody sees you, then you have failed to use the way correctly.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('retiredguy', 'T')he analogy that comes to mind is the Titanic. When the ship started to sink, the passengers had but a few choices. They could hope for survival by getting aboard the limited number of lifeboats available (small group survival) or they could grab something that floats and jump the ship (individual survival). By leaving the ship, they insured their immediate survival but had to survive a period of time in a hostile environment.

I was comparing civilization after Peak Oil to the final voyage of Edmund Fitzgerald. "The legend lives on from the oil fields on down, of the big lake they call Ghawar Saudi. The lake it is told gives us endless black gold, and there's no need to downsize the economy..." (begin instrumental chorus)

You could make your house, doors and paneling out of Gingerbread, and no one would ever know.

Jerusalem artichokes are a stealth food supply. To the ordinary person they just look like a thick stand of tall, weedy, scraggly yellow flowers, about the size of sunflowers, but not the luxurious blooms.

but these tall, scraggly flowers have a very edible tuber that can be cultivated and consumed as a staple food, like wheat or potatoes.

You could seek musicians among your fellow Prepared and call yourselves a band, "The Nihilists" or "The Schadenfreuders." Here's your first song...

Death to the world, the food is gone!
Let Earth become a grave!
The fearful faint of heart
Can see approaching doom.
Let Heaven and Nature wail,
As people try and fail
To stay fed and warm, and out of jail!

Sing it around Christmas time to your unprepared neighbors: the ones who scoffed, the ones who said "trust the government," the ones who pushed "global interdependence," the ones who were apathetic until they became hungry.

It takes more than a spark
To keep a fire burning.
And since you have no fuel
You'll die from winter freezing.
That's how it is with energy
A shame you've none of it.
You know you should
Have turned to wood
Too late, you're passing on.

Peak oil was so fateful!
Nature was triumphant!
Die-off ye deluded ones and fade from the world.
God's own IQ test
Spares the smart and kills the rest.
I've got myself a stash of food!
No dinner guests I must be rude!
I have a gun, the barrel's blued!
A lock's on the door!

Hello darkness my old friend
I've come to talk with you again...

Except for the ants and cockroaches that would literally eat you out of house and home.
Kind regards, Katkinkate
