People had ways of living without all that for thousands of years, and they generally weren't too miserable. How about we tear it all down and live the gatherer-hunter, farming, and/or ecovillage lives? Many kinds of society can exist without vehicles and all the crap they cause. Well, except the completely-overpopulated kind, but that will end soon enough.
Besides, the question is moot, since after gas prices go up, the whole vehicular infrastructure will be difficult to maintain. Who's going to take care of the highways and other long-distance modes of travel, when the only people using them are those who make (or if rich, buy) their own biodiesel? Unless the national government and military are still active, it will be up to the generous, charitable motorists (there aren't too many of those) to thanklessly care for them. Driving will thus be mostly-localized anyway.
