I must be dumb as a rock. I still believe they thought they would find WMDs. I believed they would find WMDs. The fact that they worked to present their information with a bias toward making the case for war does not surprise me.
Don't get me wrong, I think the war was a stupid idea, whether Iraq had WMDs or not. I just think that nearly everyone was surprised that we didn't turn up a single WMD.
Honestly, if they really didn't believe that Iraq had WMDs, I think they would have arranged to plant some. That was the biggest surprise for me.
It's easy to wrap up conspiracy theories in a nice little bow and bemoan our Machiavellian overlords, but I have to admit that I can't really fathom any of their true intentions most of the time. I think they are more evil than their supporters would like to believe, more incompetent than the conspiracy theorists would like to believe, and smarter than their opponents would like to believe.
